Wisconsin Historic Sites
2009 DW Destination
It’s fun flipping through old family photo albums and seeing people from our past. The pictures often tell us something about ourselves. You can do the same when exploring the state of Wisconsin by visiting several “living photo albums”, at all 10 Wisconsin Historic Sites. These are real places where real people lived, worked and played shaping Wisconsin into what it is today. Experience how German, Polish and Norwegian farmers lived and worked when they first arrived in the state by visiting Old World Wisconsin or see what stagecoach riders in 1848 saw when they stopped at the Wade House Inn halfway between Sheboygan and Fond du Lac. Sample life in the Victorian Era with a tour of the Villa Louis in Prairie du Chien, impeccably restored and furnished with exquisite items that belonged to the original owners, the Dousman family. Before it merged with Barnum and Bailey, the Ringling Brothers had their own circus headquartered in Baraboo. At Circus World, you can walk through the some of the original circus buildings constructed in what was originally called Ringlingville, learn the history in the museum, be amazed at one of the largest collections of circus wagons from around the world and then watch live performances of circus entertainers of today. And there are more places to learn the Wisconsin story. Visit the studios of photographer H.H. Bennett, the man credited with putting Wisconsin Dells on the map. Take in the scenery and the history of the fur traders and Great Lakes sailors at the Madeline Island Museum. Travel to Pendarvis in Mineral Point and relive the days of the Cornish miners who came to dig out lead from the hills. Or, learn about the roots of Wisconsin and it’s agricultural heritage with a visit to Stonefield and the home of Wisconsin’s first governor, Nelson Dewey.
