Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission
DW Destination
The Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission is an agency of eleven Ojibwe nations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, with off-reservation treaty rights to hunt, fish and gather in treaty-ceded lands. Since its creation in 1984, GLIFWC's mission is to help ensure significant, off-reservation harvests while protecting natural resources for generations to come. GLIFWC provides natural resource management expertise, conservation enforcement, legal and policy analysis, and public information services. GLIFWC is also devoted to protecting the environment from “invasive species” – plants and animals that live outside the area where they first evolved and dominate their surroundings. Once an invasive species overruns the natural habitat, agricultural lands, and waters where it has been placed, it begins to reduce biodiversity and burden our economy. GLIFWC helps promote awareness of what water-based and land-based invasives are doing to our natural habitat, and what we can do to stop them.
