Lac du Flambeau Area
Lac du Flambeau, WI
2008 Choice Destination

The Lac du Flambeau tribe became a permanent settlement in 1745 when Chief Keeshkemun led his band of natives to this area. They were seeking an area rich in food and supplies of fish, game and wild rice. Fish were harvested at night by the light of the torch. Thus the area was called Lac du Flambeau, or Lake of the Torches by the French Trappers and explorers who visited the area. Today, many of the Native American residents still practice this tradition each spring. This area of Wisconsin is rich in its Native American history and recreational opportunities that awaits its visitors. The Lac du Flambeau Tribe invites you to learn more about their tribe and to experience the raw beauty and culture that awaits visitors to their area of the state.
