We invite you to visit one of Wisconsin’s most scenic areas. Prairie du Chien is located in southwest Wisconsin along the Great River Road, which winds for 250 miles along the banks of the Mississippi River. This National Scenic Byway is known for its breathtaking views of geological formations lining the riverbanks and adjacent bluffs.
This section of Southwest Wisconsin is a great place to visit and a wonderful place to live. A large variety of attractions and activities take place throughout the year, making Prairie du Chien one of our "Choice Destinations” in Wisconsin. This area is also known for its rich history, with records dating back to the 17th century. Many of these historic sites have been preserved and are open to the public for visitation. The city is the second oldest community in the State of Wisconsin. Its rich heritage and traditions are a delight to visitors and local residents alike. Prairie du Chien is filled with sites of historic significance. Many are located on St. Feriole Island, one of the city's earliest settlements. Villa Louis, a Victorian-era estate was built on the island in the 1840s by fur trader Hercules Dousman, it was Wisconsin's first State Historic Site.
This area of Wisconsin is also a haven for sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. Go fishing on the mighty Mississippi or area trout stream. Enjoy a leisurely cruise on the Mississippi River or a canoe trip down the Wisconsin River. Two state parks and a National Monument are located in the area providing ample room for all to come and experience excellent birding and hiking opportunities. Breath-taking views of the Mississippi River from towering bluffs await.
The Prairie du Chien area also is known for its active amount of community events that fill the calendar year-round. They invite you to come and share in the riches their part of the world has to offer.
