America's Dairyland - Perception versus Reality

In this episode of Discover Wisconsin-America’s Dairyland we separate fact from fiction about the agriculture and dairy industries, dispelling myths about how farmers treat the land and their animals. Farmers will educate us about the ways they are preparing the land for future generations. It’s a little known fact that farmers often take better care of their herd than they do themselves; sacrificing improvements to their homes in favor of upgrading their barns. Keeping Wisconsin green and growing is central to how they run their farms and that is helping the state retain its status as America’s Dairyland.

Over the last 60 years, our great dairy state has been promoted through the efforts of one person: Alice in Dairyland. Sixty women have assumed the name “Alice,” and have been sharing with millions of people, all across the world, the rich history and diversity of Wisconsin agriculture. Here in Wisconsin the cow truly is a sacred animal. In this segment of Discover Wisconsin we’ll explore the cows in our lives, from cows appearing in famous art pieces, to cows in literature, and dairy-related toys. Discover the many ways that cows are part of our heritage, our psyche, our society and what we all take for granted as Wisconsinites. Most importantly, we’ll look at how cows contribute to the nation’s food supply. What’s not to love about the cow? She appears in almost every way, shape, or form in our daily lives. Cow motifs appear on everything from our dinner ware and clothing, to even the décor we use to furnish our homes. Several people have gone so far as to fully decorate their homes with collections and images of the dairy cow! With all that emphasis on the Dairy cow its easy to see that she’s the main reason for our states 20.6 billion dollar industry. And she doesn’t stop there; exports of dairy products span over 80 billion dollars and serve several different countries around the world. It’s easy to see why the cow truly is an asset to America’s Dairyland.

Americans consume about 350 slices of pizza every second, making it one of the most popular foods today. In celebration of pizza’s 100th birthday in the US in 2005, we’re taking a journey through its history. For over 150 years, Wisconsin Cheese has been produced in the European tradition, carrying forth the quality and craftsmanship of the early days of the cheesemaking process. Today, Wisconsin has more licensed cheesemakers than any other state. Another crowning achievement for Wisconsin is its claim to the Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker program. Established in 1994 this joint effort between the Wisconsin Center for Dairy Research at UW Madison and the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, provides Wisconsin Cheesemakers the opportunity to participate in the most ambitious and rigorous advanced training program in the country and the only Master program outside of Europe.
