Columbus, WI
2008 DW Destination

Located in the southwestern corner of Columbia County, Columbus is a small, safe, friendly Midwestern town, with a population of about 4,500. It is sometimes called the Redbud City for its many redbud trees, which paint the town pink when the trees bloom in the spring. Columbus has many of the attributes you would find in any small town in Wisconsin, but there are some things you can find only here, destinations that can be called “strictly Columbus.” Columbus is home to unique companies, such as “Wisconsin Pottery,” a nationally recognized folk artist known for producing traditional aged Redware. And that's only one of many great shopping option. Whether you’re a serious collector or just browsing, Columbus has an abundance of antique shops. Since 1983, the city has been home to the largest antique mall in Wisconsin, where over 100,000 visitors come every year. Columbus is also home to the Amtrak historic depot, built in 1906. Take the train to the west coast, or via Chicago, all the way to New Orleans. Columbus is almost a perfect snapshot of the late 19th century, with more than 200 century-old commercial and residential buildings. The city has made it a point to preserve and promote its historic architecture. There are wonderful retail shopping stores, great restaurants, and terrific lodging for that weekend getaway. Columbus has “Just What You Want," both big and small attractions, just enough to offer the peaceful and simple life only a small town can provide.

In this edition of Discover Wisconsin, we’ve got trains, horse-drawn carriages, unique pottery, antiques, and historic architecture - we’re in Columbus, and we’ve got “Just What You Want!” Every year, more than 100,000 visitors come to the world's largest antiques mall here in Columbus. Inside the mall, there is also a museum dedicated to Christopher Columbus. This museum is made up of owner Dan Amato’s private collection of souvenirs, displays, and Christopher Columbus artifacts from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Almost all of the buildings in the downtown commercial district are on the National Register of Historic Places, making Columbus's downtown a truly historic sight! With brochure in hand the casual traveler or seasoned student of design can take in both commercial district buildings and homes that date back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Visitors can also explore special events, like the Columbus Carriage Classic pleasure driving show and Colonial Carriage Auction. There’s plenty more in this edition of Discover Wisconsin, from shopping and dining to scenic lodging, so join us as we discover Columbus!
