Vilas County’s designated cross-country ski trails are among the best in the Midwest. The trails are a mix public forest trails and service group maintained trails. Ski your way through a variety of timber types including oak, pine, aspen, and birch. You’ll be able to witness the variety of opportunities provided within the National Forest, seeing that most of the county’s winter trails are hiking and bicycling trails during spring, summer, and fall. You may also be able to catch a glimpse of some of the wildlife in the Eagle River area, as many trails are located in designated watchable wildlife areas. You’ll find trails throughout the area groomed for both skating and classic-style cross-country skiing. The terrain varies anywhere from mostly level to hilly, and trail difficulty and trail lengths are marked.

When the snow flies and the wind howls, we know where to find Wisconsin anglers – on the numerous frozen lakes! When you come and visit us at Wild Eagle Lodge, be sure to pack some extra warm clothes so that you can get out on the ice-covered water and pull out that trophy fish. Vilas County is home to one of the largest concentrations of freshwater lakes on earth, and our resort is located on the shores of two: Duck Lake and Lynx Lake. We boast some of the best smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, and musky fishing in North America and also have exceptional fishing for crappie, bluegill, and northern pike, all of which provide a fishing variety you’ll find nowhere else. For more than a century, Eagle River has been the fishing destination of choice for anglers from around the Midwest. Winter, spring, summer, and fall: Vilas County is the place to fish. Have a go at sitting on an upturned bucket under a cloudy sky with a light snow coming down and waiting for the tug from beneath the frozen depths. Or, if you prefer, set some tip ups and watch and wait for a bite in the warmth of your Ice fishing shack. The best thing about Ice fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge, is your lodge home is located less than two hundred feet away.

  • Snowshoeing at Wild Eagle Lodge Play

With bright white snow, clear blue skies, and pristine trails, the Northwoods is a wonderful place for snowshoeing, a growing sport in Wisconsin. Snowshoeing is a great workout that doesn’t require technical skill; it’s an easy way to explore places touched by Old Man Winter. Here at Wild Eagle Lodge, you can rent a pair of our snowshoes and snowshoe around our property, or venture elsewhere. Snowshoers will find trekking opportunities on both trails and hundreds of miles of logging roads in the Nicolet National Forest near Eagle River. The forest east of our town is laced with beautiful cross country ski/snowshoe trails. The surrounding communities of Vilas County, including the Boulder Junction, Manitowish Waters, Sayner, and Land O’ Lakes areas also have many beautiful places to snowshoe and explore. Most people want trails, but the best paths are the ones you make yourselves. Those can seem to be anywhere after a fresh snowfall; cut across the lake and see for yourself!
