Concert IV – A Notable Feast

April 22 @ 7:30 pm - April 23 @ 4:00 pm

The CWSO’s final offering for the 68th season begins with a stroll Down a Country Lane. Based on music that Aaron Copland composed for a documentary film, the programmatic score depicts the settlement of Eastern European refugees in New England. Of the film, Copland states, “Strangeness between people breaks down when they live and work and meet together as neighbors.”
Initially receiving harsh criticism from Tchaikovsky’s desired pianist, Nikolai Rubinstein, Piano Concerto No.1, Op. 23, has become one of the composer’s most popular works as well as being known as one of the best-known of all piano concertos. Dr. Stijn DeCock, “hailed for his passionate and virtuosic piano playing”- East Hampton Star, will demonstrate how the work earned its reputation. Stijn’s solo, concerto, chamber, and collaborative performances have spanned the globe, creating “a most compelling musical narrative.” – Amalfi Festival concert review.
The season’s feasting will conclude with Beethoven’s iconic Symphony No. 3 ‘Eroica,’ considered by many scholars to be a “watershed in Beethoven’s career” and “an important turning-point in the history of symphonic music.”- William Drabkin.
