Know Your Wisconsin: Sturgeon Spearing 2022

The DNR’s David Boyarski shares what sturgeon fish are like in how they are similar to sharks, prehistoric, huge fish. Sturgeon can be as old as 50 to 100 years old while getting up to 6 feet long. Thousands of people come out onto frozen Lake Winnebago to sit in their shanties for the chance to spear a sturgeon. This unique event happens annually. Lake Winnebago is one of two places where non-tribal citizens can spear for sturgeon given a short window of time.
