Stoughton

In this episode of Discover Wisconsin, host Mariah Haberman takes us to the city of Stoughton. Just a short drive from Madison, Stoughton has all the traditions, charm and appeal of a small town, plus big-city perks. Stoughton is probably best known for its Norwegian heritage, which you can learn about at the Norwegian Heritage Center, or Livsreise. This history is also celebrated with Syttende Mai - a three day, fun-filled festival that invites everyone to be "Norwegian for a day." Mariah also explores some of the many shops, galleries and restaurants in downtown Stoughton including Diakonos Designs, the Abel Contemporary Gallery, Fosdal Home Bakery, and the Viking Brew Pub. Stoughton's thriving art district includes the Stoughton Village Players Theater, and the city's crown jewel - the Stoughton Opera House. Stoughton’s appeal also extends beyond the city itself to the natural beauty of the surrounding water and parks. Mariah and her dog, Josie, take a walk through Lake Kegonsa State Park in the fall; and in the summer we take to Lake Kegonsa for some fishing, and see how much fun kids can have at Troll Beach. With a fascinating history, beautiful parks, a lively downtown and fun community events, there's so much to love about a place like Stoughton!
