Chances are you’ve likely seen the construction crews on the sides of Wisconsin highways performing routine highway maintenance, but did you know Wisconsin is the only state in which the counties are in charge of the maintenance? In other states, highway maintenance is done by the state’s Department of Transportation, but here in Wisconsin we have a routine maintenance agreement with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation that gives the counties the responsibility of maintaining our state highways. Relying on the Wisconsin County Highway Association instead of the state lowers the cost of maintaining highways for taxpayers and provides a more efficient system of clearing roads, especially in the winter time. Winter snow removal and pretreatment of roads is critical to highway safety, and we can thank our local Wisconsin counties for keeping our roads safe all months of the year.
