Wisconsin’s Walking Tours: Ashland Murals Reflect Powerful Moments in History (Segment)

Wisconsin has a deep history, and there are so many cities that have put a lot of work in preserving the story of their community. Mariah tours the downtowns of Burlington, Plymouth, Ashland and Waukesha to learn how each continues to keep their past alive and remind us why that is so important.

Ashland, although a small town in Northern Wisconsin, has an expansive history worth exploring. The first settlers came to Ashland in 1854, but a series of troubles drove most of them away by 1870. Prosperity returned in the form of logging and iron ore mining in the area, and Ashland quickly came to be. Today, murals are located throughout the city, reflecting its rich history and those who have made tremendous contributions to its development. The Ashland Mural Walk (https://www.visitashland.com/murals) is the perfect opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the history of the town from a unique and artful perspective.

The murals were and have continued to be created by two local artists, Susan Prentice Martinsen and Kelly Meredith (http://www.muralbrickroad.com/artists.php). The two women started painting murals 21 years ago when they received a grant for the first historical mural to be made downtown. The women have retrieved historical photos and stories from community members in order to paint and curate the best murals to reflect the stories of Ashland. In this segment, Mariah speaks with Sue Martinsen and tours Ashland in order to intricately uncover the story of each mural.

One specific breathtaking mural showcases lumber workers, the prominence of the lumber industry in Northern Wisconsin, and the deep impact loggers have made on the community of Ashland. The mural is one of many that are indicative of the artists’ goal to portray the people and industries that have shaped the town. Another powerful mural depicts 32 women of varying professions and backgrounds across several eras of time. The goal of this particular mural is to depict and celebrate the women who have consistently been overshadowed by men, despite having made tremendous contributions to the city of Ashland.

Participating in the Ashland Mural Walk is an incredible opportunity for visitors to not only appreciate the work of talented artists, but immerse themselves in the history of the charming town of Ashland.
