Ashland County
Ashland County, here we come! Home to two stunning Wisconsin state parks, Ashland County is a must-explore this autumn. Between Big Bay State Park and Copper Falls State Park, you’re in for some spectacular and vibrant views.
Begin your exploration at Big Bay State Park, located on Madeline Island. Hop aboard the Madeline Island Ferry Line and enjoy the colorful cruise along the way. Once you’ve arrived, soak in the scenery by hiking the many trails or camping under the canopy.
Onto another gorgeous northern Wisconsin gem–Copper Falls State Park. Copper Falls features all the fall scenery you love, from glowing gorges to awe-inspiring waterfalls. Even better? It’s a one-stop shop for all things outdoor recreation. Adventure beneath the colorful canopy, biking, fishing, swimming, and hiking–the park’s claim to fame.
Sauk County
To Sauk County! Sauk County is known for its pristine parks, home to both county parks and state parks. In this go-to guide, we’re checking out Mirror Lake State Park, Natural Bridge State Park, and the famous Devil’s Lake State Park.
Starting at Mirror Lake State Park, dive right into the ultimate showstopper, Mirror Lake. During the fall, Mirror Lake radiates the peak colors. Shades of vibrant reds and yellows fill the shoreline and towering cliffs. For prime viewing, pontoon around the lake or relax on shore at Ishnala Supper Club. Make the views even sweeter with a classic Wisconsin Old Fashioned.
Nearby, Natural Bridge State Park is open for a day of discovery! This Wisconsin state park is known for its natural sandstone arch. While in Sauk County, Devil’s Lake State Park is an absolute must! Devil’s Lake State Park is recognized as the most popular and largest state park in the state. And, trust us, it lives up to and even exceeds all expectations. As the prime of fall fades in, hike the color-filled bluffs to scenic overlooks of a reflecting lake below. Or, venture down to the sandy beach for a picturesque paddle.
Door County
Our exploration continues in Door County, where more Wisconsin state parks showcase the season’s peak colors. We’re stopping by a few of our all-time favorites–Whitefish Dunes State Park and Peninsula State Park.
Stop #1: Whitefish Dunes State Park. Open for day use, Whitefish Dunes features unique landscapes, like vast sand dunes. During your autumn visit, explore the shores of Lake Michigan, through sandy stretches, and glowing forests. Choose your adventure amidst the colors, either by foot or by bike.
Stop #2: Peninsula State Park. Peninsula State Park is like no other park, known as Wisconsin’s most complete park. These 3,700 acres hold almost all the seasonal adventures you can dream of, from camping and golfing to hiking and biking. Adding to the vibrant views, a lighthouse, and the Niagara Escarpment cliffs make it even more magnificent.
St. Croix County & Washington County
We aren’t done just yet! More colorful Wisconsin state parks are nestled in both St. Croix County and Washington County. While St. Croix County holds the oldest, Washington County holds the newest.
In St. Croix County, discover Interstate State Park, Wisconsin’s oldest state park. This state park offers incredible views of both the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and the Dalles of the St. Croix–a famous gorge recognized statewide. Get an up-close look at the fall foliage by paddling, hiking, or even rock climbing, to name a few.
From the old to the new, head to Washington County’s Lizard Mound State Park. Besides the tremendous scenery, this Wisconsin state park holds much tribal history. On-site, encounter several Native American effigy mound sites, each shaped in various forms. Between the brilliant shapes and vibrant hues, Lizard provides visitors with a fall experience like none other.
