Summers in the La Crosse Region are truly remarkable, especially for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you embark on an exploration on the water or the trails, you’re bound to have a blast! From outdoor recreation to community celebrations, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

On the Water

In Onalaska, hop on the Onalaska Canoe Trail, where you can meander through the winding river channels, soaking up the sun and scenic views along the way. For another water adventure and historic Mississippi River experience, take a tour aboard the La Crosse Queen

Running since 1976, this paddle boat offers a variety of cruises, including lunch and dinner! Along the way, there are a plethora of opportunities to see the abundant wildlife and learn about the area’s rich history–even fascinating points of interest.

While you’re on the water, bring your fishing gear, or book a guide trip! After all, you’re in a river town. This region is an angler’s paradise, holding a variety of species such as catfish, walleye, largemouth, smallmouth, crappie, and perch. When you’ve worked up an appetite from all that casting, many riverside restaurants and refreshments await–like Huck Finn’s on the Water.

On the Trails

While the water offers vast modes of exploration, the trails are a biker’s and hiker’s dream, totaling over 100 miles throughout the region. Most notably, the Gateway Trails on the famous Grandad Bluff are a staple for bikers and hikers alike. Overlooking 3 states and reaching 600 feet high, these trails showcase the spectacular beauty and ancient topography of the region.

For more breathtaking explorations, by foot or pedal, check out the Great River State Trail, which offers 24 miles of scenic pathways. Depart from Onalaska at the Great River Landing, and you’ll be on your way to an unforgettable day.

Summer Celebrations

Celebrate the beautiful summer season in the surrounding communities! Several summer celebrations take place in the La Crosse Region, including June Dairy Days, Riverfest, Country Boom, Interstate Fair, Kornfest, and many, many more!

You won’t want to miss out on these fun-filled, family-friendly celebrations. There’s plenty of food, fun, and fireworks to go around, so mark your calendars and let the summer adventures begin!

Family-Friendly Festivals

Every September, the small town of La Crescent welcomes one and all to partake in the festivities at Applefest! Applefest has everything, from thrilling rides and exciting games to kiddy parades and endless entertainment.

In addition, there’s an annual flea market and Arts & Crafts Fair, for those who are looking for a little shopping. Feeling inspired by the art? Join Chalk Fest and fill the sidewalks with your very own vibrant mural.

Smooth Wines

From the buzzing downtown streets to the breathtaking overlooks of the Mississippi River Valley, find your way to River View Vineyard & Winery for a little piece of paradise. What started with 60 vines has grown to over 1,000 today! Most notably, River View is known for its River Boat White–semi-sweet with a hint of cinnamon.

Quick tip: Less than a mile away, uncover more epic views at Apple Blossom Overlook on the Great River Road.

Scenic Drives

With snowflakes beginning to fall, the La Crosse Region lights up with more seasonal adventures, from skiing and skating to restaurants and light shows.

Skiing and Skating

Ready to hit the slopes? Head to none other than Mt. La Crosse–home to a deep skiing history that dates back to 1959. The beautiful geography of the La Crosse Region, prominently the bluffs, offers steep runs and TONS of fun! With vertical drops of up to 516 feet, you’re in for an icy thrill you’ll never forget.

If you’re seeking a slower pace, check out the Coulee State Forest, where there are over 100 miles of cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing trails perfect for a peaceful winter adventure! Be sure to also add the La Crosse River State Trail to your list. This unique trail runs along an abandoned railroad track for 22 miles through West Salem. From the slopes to the icy surface of Lake Neshonoc, lace up your skates and glide along the ice track!

Restaurants

Even though winter is a prime time to snuggle in cozy restaurants, these local gems are open year-round! In the La Crosse Region, there is a wide variety of menus, cuisines, price points, and unique atmospheres to enjoy. The best part? Many are original to La Crosse, with local owners and intertwined bar history and supper club traditions.

If you’re looking for a casual (but classy) bar with great food, The Crow is the go-to place. Enjoy a fine cocktail and an exquisite meal. Any pizza lovers? There are 3 must-tries: Big Al’s, Polito’s, and Uno Venti. Save room for dessert! You won’t want to miss out on tasting the creamy and delicious ice cream concoctions all made with Wisconsin dairy at The Pearl.

Light Shows

Setting the tone for the holiday season, the Rotary Lights in Riverside Park are truly magical. Since 1995, this light show has been put up as a magical display with an impactful mission–to feed the hungry. Today, there are more than 4 million lights and abundant donations to local food pantries, made possible by visitors and locals who support the mission each year.

Spring

Surrounded by a scenic and serene setting, with a vast variety of flowers, plants, and fountains, the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe promotes peace in this new, flourishing season.

Riverside International Friendship Gardens
