The open, deep, blue water; the cawing seagulls that follow us as we haul in nets, the waves hitting the tug, the ice being chunked up to keep the catch fresh, the sunrise blasting us with the natural beauty of Lake Superior. This breathtaking journey is one for the books.<br /><br />We get up dark and early with commercial fishermen, Eric Peterson, and ride in his tug boat on the waves of lake Superior in search of fish. Going to work before dawn is what Eric does every single day up in Bayfield, Wisconsin. He and his crew never take a day off from supplying the<br />region with primarily white fish. Another Eric P. - Eric Paulsen, learns from this generational fishmen himself in what machinery and tools are used in the fishing industry. Tribal fishmen, Eric, has a bright passion for fishing, which can be seen on the ever present grin on his face. It is hard work to bring in fish to market everyday, but Eric makes it look like the funnest job you could wish for. Once the boat docks the fish go to Bodin Fisheries.<br /><br />Bill Bodin himself shares about the distribution process of these fish and a behind the scenes look at getting these fish onto your plate. There are even customers on the coasts that order from Bodin when they miss a taste of home. Bill has had a relationship reaching back to Eric Peterson’s father when he fished and now carries on that relationship with his son. Eric Paulsen checks out Pasty’s for a taste of the white fish that the other Eric caught and it is double Eric approved. Grandfather, Larry Erickson, and his grandson, Brodie Erickson started their history with snowmobiling together when Brodie was just a baby in Hurley, Wisconsin. Larry has been in The White Thunder snowmobile club for decades now while Brodie spearheaded his own group, a youth snowmobile club called The Little Rippers. With a value on community and exploration of those sacred untouched views just after a snowfall, we hear about why this family’s life is set on snowmobiling. Let’s explore the snow capitol in Iron County!<br /><br />Flying over the vast trail systems of Hurley we see riders spraying down snowy trails with their sleds. Learning about the work that goes into grooming this system shows all of the care that goes into this sport, which takes teams of volunteers to keep running. The giant groomer machines glide deep into the night into morning. The family is proud of the work they put into them.<br /><br />At Weber Lake, Trail Coordinator, Tara, tells us about all of the other winter sports and activities found in Iron County from cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, ice skating, ice fishing. We learn how much has gone into preserving these sporting opportunities while maintaining and improving safety for participants both locals and visitors. Richard Bong grew up on his family farm in the small village of Poplar, Wisconsin. He would later become a decorated veteran, including the medal of honor, known as the “Aces of Aces” for being the WWII fighter pilot who downed the most enemy aircrafts in his P-38 Lighting with a record of 40 total in his over 200 mission flights. Bong Veterans Historical Center in Douglas County, John Gidley, helps to educate us more on this American figure. Richard Bong grew up watching the mail plane that delivered Former President Calvin Coolidge mail at his summer White House. <br /><br />Contributing to his country today, the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center, which opened in 2002, in Superior, is a meeting place for veterans to fellowship together in their naval family. This center is also a museum that houses WWII relics that people can come visit today and learn the history that they are standing on. The purpose of the center is to honor the stories of not only Bong, but all WWII veterans. The center even has an oral history program where veterans can tell their story from their days in service. These recordings are then housed at the Library of Congress. <br /><br />Come visit the past at this Center that also celebrates and honors today’s veterans.
