Home to heartwarming and inspiring stories, Green Lake County embodies a unique collective of people in America’s Dairyland. In this special blog, we’re highlighting a few fellow Wisconsinites and their one-of-a-kind stories. Read on and hear about The Nortons, Russell Moccasin, and The Soul Hammer.
A Legacy on Green Lake: The Nortons
Meet Joe Norton, a charismatic and skilled boat builder, who shares his deep love for boats and his family’s connection to Green Lake County. Learn about Joe’s early experiences on his father’s boat, delivering mail, and exploring Green Lake.
“By the time I was six or eight years old, I was already building toy boats. Wooden boats fascinated me. The marina was a Chris Craft dealership and I wanted to be part of it; I wanted to work on the boats. From there on, it just grew,” said Joe, founder of Norton Boat Works.
Joe’s brother, Doug Norton, shares his own fond memories of their father’s boat and the adventures they had together as brothers. Doug serves as the general manager of Norton’s of Green Lake–a restaurant rooted in tradition.
The third brother of five, Mike Norton, expresses his own personal connection to Green Lake, explaining why being on the water is so important to him and his family. He describes his current role as Charter Captain for Norton Fishing Adventures on the lake.
Dave Norton, CEO of Norton’s Dry Dock, concludes, “We were gifted taking care of the lake. It still carries on today. We’re still at it.”

Russell Moccasin: A Journey Through Time and Craftsmanship
From family legacies to unique businesses, we turn to Luke Kolbie, the CEO of Russell Moccasins, and his business partner, Joe Gonyo. This duo highlights the deep history of Russell Moccasins in Green Lake County.
“Each of the boots that we make are very unique, very special, and poised for a lifetime of use,” said CEO Luke Kolbie.
Hear from the craftsmen, who provide valuable insights into each stage of the creation, from leather soaking to hand sewing. As they share their tips and tricks, witness the authentic moccasin construction process firsthand.
Moccasin construction dates back to Native American days because of its simplicity and durability. In the early days of Russell Moccasin, they developed a game-changing waterproof layer. These boots soon became the boots of expeditionaries.
To name a few, Charles Lindbergh wore his Russell Moccasins on a trans-Atlantic flight. In addition, World War II veteran Shaffer wore his beloved Russell Birdshooter boots on a remarkable Appalachian Trail hike. These noteworthy men, and many more, showcase the enduring legacy of Russell Moccasins.

Art is for Everyone: The Soul Hammer Collective
The city of Princeton, Wisconsin, and greater Green Lake County has always boasted eclectic artistic opportunities. Over the last few years, this community of artists has grown. Among these artists are Tammi Ann Ross and John Ahrens–the founders of Soul Hammer.
This remarkable business venture unites diverse artists in a collaborative haven for creative expression. The slogan, “We don’t make mistakes, we just make changes,” is a testament not only to the creative process but also to the lives of its founders.

Soul Hammer serves as a testament to the profound impact that art can have on individuals and communities, creating spaces for growth, inspiration, and the celebration of the extraordinary within the ordinary.
