Forest Habitat and Recreation | Know Your Wisconsin

February 29, 2024

Years ago, a booming logging industry created paths and roads throughout Wisconsin. Today, many have been transformed into recreational trails used all year round for hiking, biking, ATVing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and more. The maintenance and management of these trails is largely dependent on the state’s forest industry, which actively works to keep forests healthy and accessible. In addition to trails, forest management is also important in maintaining healthy wildlife habitats. “We need a mixture of forests, both from wildlife and a social standpoint,” said Gary Zimmer, assistant executive director of the Wisconsin County Forest Association. “That mixture includes young forests, middle-aged forests, and old forests; and management helps us get that way.” Visitors are drawn to well-maintained trails and healthy wildlife habitats, which in turn, benefits both the tourism and hospitality industries here in Wisconsin.
