We’re back on the road – the Great River Road! In this travelogue, DW host Eric Paulsen is exploring scenic La Crosse County and Vernon County. He begins his adventure at McGilvray’s Seven Bridges Road, then heads to Onalaska for a bike ride on the Great River State Trail. In La Crosse, he takes a historic paddlewheel river boat tour on the Mississippi, visits the serene Myrick Park, and enjoys the breathtaking views from Grandad Bluff. Continuing south into Vernon County, Eric marvels at the natural splendor of the scenic byway. Even though it has evolved with time, the War Memorial Center continues to symbolize the sacrifices made and battles fought by brave veterans through its design and mission.<br /><br />The War Memorial Center, by design, is unique and unlike any other, designed by veteran and architect Erro Saarinen. Each of the building’s element, from its physical features to its orientation, carry significance, resembling moments from battle and reflecting places to ponder. <br /><br />It’s mission–to honor the dead and serve the living–solidifies this profound symbolism. Within the building, instrumental veteran organizations and auxiliary programs operate to help the living and serve fellow brothers and sisters. <br /><br />Hear the heartfelt stories of veterans Julian Plaster and Nick Gomez, and his family’s generational history of serving our nation.
