The History of Wauwatosa



February 29, 2024

Join Eric Paulsen as he sets out to discover the stories behind the remnants of Wauwatosa’s history found among the local landscapes including Hoyt Park, Hartung Park and County Grounds Park. In talking with local historian at The Landing at Hoyt Park, Jeff Roznowski, Eric learns about the treasured history Hoyt Park carries, including rich Native American beginnings. He then explores the many magnificent walking trails like the Hoyt Foot Bridge overlooking the Menomonee River where Menomonee Natives once fished. To get a closer look, Eric hits the Menomonee Parkway on bike, which leads all the way to another historic gem, Hartung Park.

Hartung Park brings its own unique kind of treasures of the past that can still be found today–fossils! Over 20 types of fossils, or arthropods, can be found buried in the sand. On the grounds, walking trails loop around the natural landscapes and even connect to the mysterious stone labyrinth–a picture-perfect sight. The mystery continues at County Grounds Park, a vast greenery scattered with artifacts from the once-standing 1800s insane asylum.
