Opening its doors for the first time in 1942, this Swiss-inspired cheese creamery and store is perhaps best known for serving up their signature grilled cheese sandwich utilizing some of their award-winning specialty cheeses. (And some say it’s the best grilled cheese in the whole county…) What started as a fluke idea has expanded into several varieties of grilled cheese and even soup and mac and cheese. Decatur Dairy takes things to the next level with their original creations, including memorable combinations like Colby-Swiss and chedster. If you’re planning a trip or passing through the Napa Valley of Cheese (Green County, that is) then consider Decatur Dairy an absolute must-stop!
Let’s talk about Wisconsin icons. There’s Aaron Rodgers, Wisconsin Cheese and of course, Spotted Cow. The latter of the bunch is the brain child of the now-legendary New Glarus Brewing Company. Take a fascinating self-guided tour of this mammoth brewery before enjoying your own interestingly named brew on the relaxing patio. Before you head out, make sure to check out the gift shop to stock up on your favorite Wisconsin cheeses and more!
Round up the whole family and head on in to one of New Glarus’ most historic restaurants. At Glarner Stube, Swiss cheese fondue reigns supreme and whether it’s your first time dining in or your 100th, it’s a must-try shareable dish. Local aged swiss cheese is a key ingredient in many of the meals here, including the Roesti potato and their famous Reuben.
The verdict is in: Green County is Wisconsin cheese heaven! Have you been to any of these iconic spots in southern Wisconsin? Chime in below!

Glarner Stube Restaurant in New Glarus is a wonderful Swiss restaurant! In fact, going there this weekend.
Try that grilled cheese sandwich when you arrive. You WILL NOT be disappointed. My brother and I fought over that ONE grilled cheese sandwich that we shared. Throw down your salad for this moment of bliss! Buy cheese and enjoy the best of the best of the cheese makers. This place is a gem.
