Summer

Summer’s in the Wisconsin Northwoods is like no other place. Whether you’re tucked in the heart of it all in Minocqua or in a smaller town like Three Lakes, these communities provide some of the best summer days you could ask for!
Summer in the Northwoods can be filled with plenty of different activities: swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, riding the ATV trails, and more! One summer activity that the Northwoods is specifically home to is lake life. Now, we know many places across the state provide fantastic lake day opportunities but there is nothing like the quietness, stillness, and beauty of the lake filling the Northwoods. Tomahawk is specifically home to fun swimming opportunities in the area. Whether you’ve wanted to get in on the fun at the beach or you’re wanting to get out on a boat, there is an opportunity for it all!
Another piece to the summers in the Northwoods is getting out to explore the area by foot or bike. The Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail System is one that has really helped the Northwoods become a great place to explore on two wheels! The trail system is a paved path that travels 52 miles through St. Germain, Sayner, Boulder Junction, Manitowish Waters, and Mercer.

Fall in the Northwoods is an underrated experience. Whether you’re wanted to do some fall fishing on the lakes or you’re wanting to go out for a fall scenic drive… The Northwoods is filled with fall fun all over.
One experience in the Northwoods that can never be looked past is getting out to find the best fall colors surrounding the area. Usually, peak colors will set in between late September and early October in the Northwoods. Many decide to head out for a hike through some of the most gorgeous areas like Minocqua. In the specific area, there are six trail options to check out all fall season: McNaughton Lake Trail, North Trout Lake Trail, Madeline Lake Trail, Fallison Lake Trail, Raven Trail, and the Bearskin Trail. Not only does the Minocqua area have great hiking trails but it is also home to Rustic Road 58 and Rustic Road 60 where you can ride along and take your own fall color tour through the Northwoods.
Along with the great opportunities to see fall color in the Northwoods, Vilas County has over 1,300 lakes and is home to the Musky Capital of the World, Boulder Junction. This is a perfect fall hotspot all fall long to head out and soak in the fall colors, weather, and abundance of fish! Boulder Junction offers local fishing guides and even great resources for residents and tourists alike, a Fishing 101 guide filled with tips and tricks for first-time anglers!

Winter

While summer and fall in the Northwoods are great for exploring the natural beauty of the area in the warmth, the winters can be absolutely stunning for any snow junkie! Eagle River is specifically a winter playground that you can’t miss out on when it comes to living in the Northwoods during the winter.
Living up north also includes being more than okay with an abundant amount of snowfall all winter long. With that being said, it ties hand in hand with why Eagle River is the Snowmobile Capital of the World! The area itself is home to the Snowmobile Derby and has miles and miles of groomed trails throughout. Once winter rolls back around, check out the trail conditions here
Not only is there an abundance of snowmobile trails throughout the area, but snowshoeing and skiing have also become some popular lifestyle pieces to living in the Northwoods. In Rhinelander, you can find some of the area’s best-secluded cross-country skiing spots. Some trails to see for yourself are: Cassian County Two-Way Trail, Cavoc Trails, Northwoods Ski Trail, Enterprise County Trail, and the Nose Lake Trail. Also, Rhinelander is home to some great snowshoe trails to get out into the woods and explore the natural beauty that the winter holds in Northern Wisconsin.

While Spring brings different weather yearly in the Northwoods, it still provides a wonderful opportunity to do a bit of it all while Up North. Snow? Hit the snowshoe trails. Sunny and 50? Head out for a beautiful bike ride on one of the trails or paths hidden throughout the area.
In the springtime, many like to head out once the ice melts off the lakes on a canoeing or kayaking trip to enjoy the nature and wildlife that is surrounded by the Northwoods. Three Lakes is home to multiple nature trails perfect for getting out and paddling the waters. The three trails are: Crystal Creek Paddling Trail, Julia-Virgin-Whitefish Lakes Paddling Trail, and the Upper Pine River Paddling Trail. These make for a perfect spring day out finding your favorite hidden gems throughout the Three Lakes area!
Springtime also brings out clear roads and dedicated motorcycle riders! In Tomahawk, you can be sure to find a road that leads you right into Motorcycle Country of the Northwoods. Scenic routes can be enjoyed all year long but the spring has to be mentioned as it is the opening of the rider’s season and is the start of colors that begin to pop up all over! It really is a scenic hotspot for road bikers to get out and enjoy the beauty of the Northwoods.
