What started as a fun event for families to attend on New Year’s Eve has become a tradition spanning over a decade! The Plymouth Cheese Drop Gala has even attracted the attention of the national news on several occasions. The Pine River Dairy in Manitowoc is well-known in the dairy industry for its expertise in crafting butter and butter blends. One interesting fact about this successful dairy is that of the 20 employees, only 3 are men. This small family dairy churns out high-quality products and is proudly run and operated by women. Laurie Olm, President of the Pine River Dairy said, “I’m very happy that my parents kept the business going to hand it down to us girls.” Olm did face a few skeptics when she stepped up as President but has proven to be highly successful since she took over the family business. Terry Beckman got his start in the dairy industry as a welder manufacturing dairy and cheesemaking equipment. As he worked his way up at Stoelting Company,, he was able to learn the business and eventually move into a service position. He eventually retired from the company and started a business refurbishing curd knives for cheese companies. <br /><br />Dairy Fab LLC was able to create a niche in the industry. Right now, they seem to be the only ones that do this kind of work exclusively. In recent years the business has expanded, and Beckman included members of his family to grow the business. With no plans of slowing down, the business is projecting continued growth.

One of the first men in space was born in Sparta, Wisconsin. Deke Slayton was an important member of the Mercury Seven group. These seven American astronauts were the first-ever chosen for the program. And now, this important piece of history is memorialized in downtown Sparta, at the Deke Slayton Space and Bicycle Museum. Alli Karrels, Executive director of the museum stated, “The Deke Slayton Space and Bike Museum is a wonderful combination. We combine everything into a progression of transportation, starting with bikes, going on to planes, and into space.” The museum has several unique artifacts on loan from NASA, including Slayton’s original spacesuit from his 1959 mission. This museum also features a moon rock, the only one in the entire state of Wisconsin. <br /><br />On the more earthly side of things, the museum has more than 100 bikes on display, starting from bikes made in the mid-1800s. This is fitting as Sparta is known as the Bicycling Capital of America, with the first Rails to Trails Program in the country. The evolution of the bicycle and space travel creates a unique experience for visitors.

Budgets across the state are tighter than ever and communities in Wisconsin have been feeling the pressure. The ever-tightening state-imposed budget limits are in part due to state aids that have not increased, and limitations on property tax increases. State levy limits prevent local property taxes from growing beyond the percentage of new buildings built in that community the year before. This creates a problem, particularly for small rural communities compared to larger metropolitan areas. These communities tend to struggle to attract new residents which in turn means tighter budgets and cutbacks in areas like snow plowing, police, and fire protection. <br /><br />In many ways, this problem is unique to the state of Wisconsin. Wisconsin is unlike any other state when it comes to reliance on property taxes as the sole source of locally-generated revenues. Sharon Eveland the City Administrator in Clintonville notes that local governments need a more balanced way to fund local services and more local control.
