The Plymouth Cheese Drop | Know Your Wisconsin

February 29, 2024

What started as a fun event for families to attend on New Year’s Eve has become a tradition spanning over a decade! The Plymouth Cheese Drop Gala has even attracted the attention of the national news on several occasions. This quirky event is sponsored by the Sartori Cheese Company and provides cheese gift bags for the first 250 families in attendance.

Instead of watching the ball drop at midnight to signify a new year, families in Plymouth watch a massive wedge of cheese lowered from a fire department ladder truck. So, why a cheese drop in Plymouth? It is estimated that 15% of cheese consumed in the United States moves through Plymouth as either bulk or converted cheese products for retail and foodservice. As of two years ago, Plymouth was officially designated “Cheese Capital of the World.”
