The company initially served the Wisconsin logging industry but soon became renowned among outdoor enthusiasts for their exceptional moccasin construction. Until 2022, Luke Kolbie, Joe Julian, and Joe Gonyo, a longtime Russell production manager, assumed ownership of Russell Moccasins. The trio provides insights into their shared values and aspirations.

The owners discuss notable individuals, such as Charles Lindbergh’s trans-Atlantic flight, where his Russell moccasins were the first to touch the tarmac in Paris, to World War II veteran Shaffer’s remarkable Appalachian Trail hike in his beloved Russell Birdshooter boots. Many others are mentioned including President George H.W. Bush, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Harrison Ford showcasing the enduring legacy of Russell Moccasins.

Interviews with the craftsmen provide insights into each stage of the creation, from leather soaking to hand sewing. We talk to individuals who create the shoes, as they are working on them, about the process of creating them. Luke explains the intricate steps involved, including the hand-cutting of vamp, molded sole, quarter, gusset, and toe piece, and the use of the patented overlap stitch. The documentary takes viewers behind the scenes, revealing the meticulous artistry involved in crafting leather shoes at Russell Moccasins.
