Door County: Fishing with a Cause
Door County has a long and important history. Despite pressure to develop and generate a profit from the land it has to offer, locals have made sure to keep Door County as historic as possible. Even your resort during your stay is sure to have a tie to the county’s history. Leathem Smith is an important Door County figure and created the first resort, The Lodge at Leathem Smith, in 1922. Smith was an extreme entrepreneur during his time in Door County and his creations are still loved and appreciated by many.
The Lodge is a beautiful, updated resort that offers a twenty-first century feel while also maintaining its historic roots. A special part of the resort that is a memorable spot for many is the historic ballroom. The ballroom holds over 400 people and overlooks the beautiful shore, creating the perfect atmosphere for any event. If interested in booking an event or simply spending a weekend in Door County, The Lodge would love to have you! When The Lodge isn’t hosting weddings or catering large events, they take any chance they get to give back to the community. Specifically, once a year they put on a Wounded Hero Fishing Event that offers veterans a chance to enjoy beautiful Lake Michigan. This offers 60-70 wounded veterans who served in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq a free 3-day excursion with scenic boat rides, great hospitality, and a fishing extravaganza. This meaningful event provides veterans with a time to relax and allows everyone to gather and enjoy the beauty and historic traditions that Door County holds. Be sure to plan ahead on your next adventure to Door County and stop by The Lodge to say hello!
