The Importance of the 2020 Census | Know Your Wisconsin



February 29, 2024

2020 will provide Wisconsin residents with the opportunity to be counted. The U.S. Census is mandated by the Constitution and takes place every 10 years. The goal is to take count of every person living in the United States, the District of Columbia, and the five U.S. territories. By April 1st, every Wisconsin home will receive an invitation to participate in one of three ways: by mail, telephone, or online. The census asks straightforward questions like; how many people are in your home? What are the ages of the people in your home? What is the ethnicity of the individuals within your home? It is important to know that the census will never ask you questions about banking or credit card information, and anything regarding donations, or politics.

The U.S. government assures that all personal information is kept confidential. Participation in the census benefits the state in many ways. For example, it determines how many congressional seats the state has and how much money comes into the state from the federal government for things like education, health, and human services among other things.
