Top 4 Wisconsin Camping Counties For Fall

Calling all campers! We’ve got the top 4 list of Wisconsin camping counties you need to check out, especially in the fall, brought to you by the Wisconsin Counties Association. Gear up for an epic camping excursion to Sawyer County, Oconto County, Marathon County, and Lincoln County. Let’s go!

Sawyer County

It’s no surprise that Sawyer County–part of the Northwoods–made the list of all-time Wisconsin camping counties. This beautiful northern Wisconsin county is home to some of the most serene, remote campgrounds in the entire state. We couldn’t name them all, but here are three staples to start:

  1. Sunrise Bay Campground

Starting off strong, Sunrise Bay Campground is a must-add to your list! It’s nestled along the picturesque shores of Nelson Lake. Just outside of Hayward, Sunrise Bay offers all the amenities, from water access to ATV/UTV trails galore! In addition, campers can enjoy a playground all the kiddos love, a pristine swimming area, and even a cozy campfire. 

  1. Lake Chippewa Campground

Nearby, another Sawyer County special awaits in the heart of Hayward…Lake Chippewa Campground! This campground is like no other; it’s located on an island amidst the world-famous Lake Chippewa Flowage. Enjoy top-of-the-line campsites with spectacular shoreline views that suit any and all campers and tents. 

  1. Moose Lake Campground

Hayward, and the greater Sawyer County area, is a hub of amazing campgrounds, including Moose Lake Campground. Moose Lake Campground is the ideal camping destination for outdoor enthusiasts, situated by Moose Lake and the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Set up camp and explore the outdoors, from paddling and fishing the vast lake to hiking and biking the endless wilderness.

Up next, we’re eastbound for Oconto County! Oconto County brings its own charm, earning a place on the list of Wisconsin camping counties. It not only connects to the scenic coast of Lake Michigan but also offers access to the Bay of Green Bay and the Oconto River. Without further ado, here are only some (not all) of the best-of-the-best campgrounds to check out while visiting this eastern gem:

  1. Holtwood Campground

First: Holtwood Campground! Holtwood Campground accommodates any and all your needs, whether you’re looking for a thrilling adventure or a relaxing getaway. Adventure seekers, embark on a paddling excursion by canoe or kayak along the Oconto River. For leisure lovers, soak up the sun riverside by day and snuggle up near the campfire by night. 

  1. Chute Pond County Park

Another riverside campground that is well worthwhile is located in Chute Pond County Park. This 167-acre park offers access to both Chute Pond and the Oconto River, meaning endless opportunities for outdoor recreation (or relaxation). Take your pick of 72 campsites and start planning your next fall camping retreat. 

  1. North Bay Shore County Park

Last but certainly not least in Oconto County is North Bay Shore County Park, a cozy campground with only 34 daily sites, where you and your crew can make memories of a lifetime. Nestled on the west shore of Green Bay North, this campground has it all–seclusion, serenity, and scenery.

Marathon County

Off to Marathon County, centrally located and home to an iconic Wisconsin landmark–Rib Mountain! Given this unique, natural feature, Marathon County holds some spectacular campgrounds with epic views, heightened by the fall foliage.

  1. Dells of Eau Claire Park

Let’s begin with the stunning, tucked-away Dells of Eau Claire Park, just a short drive from Wausau’s city center. This secluded campground showcases breathtaking segments of the Eau Claire River, plus several other showstoppers, like the Ice Age Trail! Splash by the beach, explore the nature trails, or simply sit back and relax. 

  1. Big Eau Pleine Park

In Mosinee, check out a fan-favorite campground–Big Eau Pleine Park. Campers can explore over 1,450 acres of land by foot, bike, or horseback, and access the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir for paddling or fishing fun! 

  1. Marathon Park

Looking for a unique, urban camping experience? You’ve come to the right place! Welcome to Marathon Park! It has it all, from the dreamy big-city amenities you love to the camping experience you’ve been searching for. During your stay, enjoy live entertainment at the outdoor amphitheater or a stroll downtown, less than a mile away.

Lincoln County

Fourth and finally on our Wisconsin camping counties list is another central, rustic gem–Lincoln County! Bring on the good times and good vibes with these quaint campgrounds:

  1. Camp New Wood

Located in Merrill, Camp New Wood is perfect for those looking for the true, roughing-it camping experience! With 7 remote sites and 16 acres, Camp New Wood gives campers a chance to reconnect with nature. Enjoy life’s littlest things, like a picnic in the great outdoors or a paddle on the Wisconsin River. Along the way, soak up all the precious moments in the peace and quietude. 

  1. Underdown Campground

Underdown Campground, near Merrill, is another rough-it escape, especially loved by those looking for outdoor recreation! Known for all things outdoor recreation, Underdown Campground is the ultimate place to stay and play. Choose your adventure–horseback riding, hiking, biking, fishing, or even seasonal hunting. 

  1. Otter Lake Campground

Just miles away from Tomahawk, Otter Lake Campground offers even more recreational opportunities for the more rustic campers! Immerse yourself in nature along the secluded shores of Otter Lake. The activities here are abundant, with a sandy swimming beach, wooded trails, and fishing hotspots, where you can catch an array of species–including bass and northern pike!
