Douglas County

Looking for the true Northwoods experience? Douglas County is the winter destination you’ve been searching for! Recognized as one of Wisconsin’s top winter wonderlands, this county provides endless opportunities for outdoor recreation.
For those who prefer a slower pace, pack your snowshoes and hit the North Country National Scenic Trail—the longest hiking trail in the nation! Weaving from North Dakota all the way to New York, this trail is a must-experience. Get a sneak peek here!
And don’t let the snowshoeing stop there! Douglas County also has some of the most stunning state parks. To note, Amnicon Falls State Park holds a wintry treasure trove of cascades. View them from the covered foot bridge or take the designated 1.5-mile snowshoe trail.
From one state park to another, up next, check out Pattison State Park, home to Wisconsin’s highest waterfall, Big Manitou Falls (165 feet high)! While there are several informal snowshoeing trails, the cross-country ski trails steal the show. Offering three distinct trail loops (beginner to moderate), Pattison State Park is the place to glide through the towering pines.
Vernon County

Westward we go to Vernon County! Can’t get enough frozen waterfalls? You’ve come to the right place. Tucked in the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, you’ll find not only gorgeous waterfalls but also incredible ice caves you simply can’t miss.
Lace up your boots and set out for an epic exploration, uncovering these hidden winter wonders. And don’t forget to pack your binoculars! Kickapoo Valley Reserve has some of the best winter birding in Western Wisconsin.
Nearby, one of Wisconsin’s oldest state parks offers an array of winter activities—snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Without further ado, welcome to Wildcat Mountain State Park! With pristine, ridge-top trails, this state park showcases the best of winter in the Driftless.
From tranquil trails to thrilling events, plan your trip to Vernon County during the annual Snowflake Ski Jumping Tournament, happening February 6th and 7th! Watch as world-class jumpers reach new heights, soaring off a 118-meter Olympic-sized hill! You’ll just have to see it to believe it.
Door County

On Wisconsin’s eastern edge, Door County is yet another dreamy winter escape well worth the drive. Bring the whole family and make unforgettable memories as the snowflakes blanket Wisconsin’s thumb.
Love a little thrill? Venture to Peninsula State Park Golf Course for a top-notch sledding adventure. Once you’ve arrived, trek to Hill 17, recognized as the best place to go sledding in Door County.
This eastern gem is also known for its amazing fat-tire biking trails. A fan-favorite hot spot? Newport State Park offers about 5 miles of gorgeous, groomed trails in the state’s first designated wilderness park. And that’s not its only claim to fame. It’s also an International Dark Sky Park! By day, hit the trails, and by night, gaze at the stars above.
While on-land adventures certainly are abundant, there’s even more to enjoy on the icy waters of Sturgeon Bay. Whether you’re on a mission to see the stunning ice shoves or catch a trophy fish, this is the bay to be in. And if you’re in the area on February 13th and 14th, you’re in for a special treat—the annual Fire & Ice Festival!
Sauk County

Last but certainly not least, Sauk County shines as Southern Wisconsin’s hub of winter adventure. Devil’s Lake State Park—Wisconsin’s most popular state park—transforms into the ultimate snowy playground. Explore your favorite summertime trails in an all-new season.
Devil’s Lake State Park may be the most popular, but have you heard about Sauk County’s hidden-gem parks? On the list is White Mound County Park, which offers some of the best snowshoeing around. And after a day of play, cozy up in the Prairie Smoke Terrace.
Want to hit the slopes? Make your way to Devil’s Head Resort, tucked in the beautiful Baraboo Bluffs. Known as one of the “Midwest’s 10 Best Ski Resorts,” this premier resort welcomes avid skiers with numerous runs and chairlifts, plus cozy accommodations and a wide variety of dining options for a winter getaway.
For even more downhill thrills, visit Cascade Mountain! Aside from the top-tier skiing and snowboarding, Cascade Mountain captivates adventurers of all ages with snow tubing! Slide down a 900-foot-long chute, and hitch a ride back up to the top! If you’re looking to make it a full day, rent a heated day cabin!
