Summer is just around the corner and we are all itching to get outdoors and explore the beautiful state of Wisconsin! Get your summer trip list started - here are 7 fun and easy trips for RVers.
Take a summer trip through the Door Peninsula for rolling views of the beautiful shorelines, charming small towns, wineries, and even visit five different state parks - all in one county! Start off this road trip in Sturgeon Bay on Highway 57 heading north. This route is filled with dunes and serene views of Lake Michigan all the way to the tip at Gill’s Rock. Stops you can make along the Lake Michigan side of the county are: Cave Point County Park, Whitefish Dunes State Park, The Farm and Baileys Harbor.
When you’re ready to round out your road trip, take Highway 42 southbound back to the starting point. While taking in the views of the bayside, there are some must see-stops you need to make along the way! This route throughout Sauk County is one you don’t want to miss out on. From hiking through the bluffs at Devil’s Lake State Park to stopping for a glass of wine at the Baraboo Bluff Winery, there’s a little bit of everything for everyone in Sauk County!
This route along Highway 113 features some iconic Wisconsin history! For one, it crosses the Wisconsin River and you can take the last ferry in the Wisconsin state highway system from Lodi over to Merrimac via the Merrimac Ferry. Heading northbound on Highway 113, you will then pass over the Baraboo River. For a fun pitstop, you can make your way over to the Circus World Museum in Baraboo, see the original AL. Ringling Mansion, or the Ringling House (turned into a Bed and Breakfast)!
Afterwards, keep driving along Highway 113 and soon you will find Devil’s Lake State Park. There you can find plenty of fun between hiking, swimming, paddling or stopping for a picnic on the beach. It’s one of the most breathtaking and iconic stops in Wisconsin you will need to make!
One road trip that will take you through some of Wisconsin’s best hidden gems is when you travel from Milwaukee to the Wisconsin Dells. Along Highway 16, start heading west and you will first travel through Oconomowoc. A must-see stop there is The Kiltie; a fun and iconic drive-in for old-time Wisconsin vibes!
As you keep on along Highway 16, you will come upon the city of Columbus. Make sure to stop and explore their downtown for a large lineup of architecture on the historic buildings, snag a unique find at the Columbus Antique Mall, and grab a fresh local brew at Cercis Brewing Company. As you keep traveling along Highway 16, you will end up in the Wisconsin Dells...aka the “Waterpark Capital of the World”!
This trip wraps and winds down the Mississippi River for 250 miles and meanders through more than 33 towns and villages: it’s called the Wisconsin National Scenic Byway and it’s a bucket list item in Wisconsin! With one-of-a-kind events throughout the year and scenic stops along the way, you can always find a reason to take a road trip along Highway 35.
This route features recreation, history, nature, culture, and even archaeology! Some spots worth the stop are: Great River Road Visitor & Learning Center, Fort Crawford Museum, and the Potosi Brewing Company.
Heading to the eastern side of the state, another road trip you must go on is the Kettle Moraine Scenic Route. Start in Sheboygan County’s Elkhart Lake and travel through six different Wisconsin counties ending in Walworth County's Whitewater! This will guide you along a road trip of 115 miles through scenic Wisconsin. See a map here.
Along the trip, you will find many panoramic views, historic sites, and recreational areas to stop. Whether you’re looking to have a picnic, get out and explore, or just make a stop and take in all the views here are a few pit stops to make along the trip: Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit, Pike Lake, and Bluff Creek State Natural Area.
This tour is 1,300 miles long and happens to circle around the world's largest freshwater lake: Lake Superior! This travels through three different states and one province of Canada, but let’s focus on the Wisconsin portion of the tour, shall we? Plan your trip and find a map of the tour here.
Some stops you can make while traveling the tour are at: Copper Falls State Park, the Ashland murals, Wisconsin Point Lighthouse, and of course the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. From the sparkling waters of Lake Superior to the gorgeous murals in Ashland, you will find views like none else along the WIsconsin Lake Superior Byway.
A trip that you may want to hold off on until the fall is traveling along Cranberry Highway. Although it is beautiful all summer long, the redness of the cranberries really starts to show up in late September, making it the perfect time to travel about 50 miles along highways from Wisconsin Rapids to Warrens (aka the cranberry capital of Wisconsin and home to the World’s Largest Cranberry Festival!). With a red sea of cranberries and the fall colors filling the tree’s, this RV trip is one you don’t want to pass through quickly. One must-see destination along the trip is the Wisconsin Cranberry Discovery Center where you can learn all things about Wisconsin’s cranberry history.
