Trek Bicycle Group is a cycling group of Johnson Creek that has an extensive history cycling in the area, while upholding a welcoming camaraderie that is alluring to newcomers. The Glacial River Trail runs right through Johnson Creek and is free from intense traffic, making it a desirable trail for the best cycling experience.<br /><br />The Aztalan State Park (https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/aztalan) is located not far from Johnson Creek, and encloses the ancient town of Aztalan. The State Park was created to preserve the remnants of Aztalan, which was established 1000 years ago as Wisconsin’s first town. Wisconsin is home to many things known around the world but rarely are so many of those found inside of a single county. Today on Discover Wisconsin, we’re touring Sheboygan County’s renowned offerings and showing you why it’s the county known around the world. <br /><br />We begin with a bit of history with some help from Wisconsin Historical Society’s Wade House Historic Site, which gives its visitors a firsthand experience of life in the mid-1800s. Visitors are taken on a trip through time as they tour a working, water-powered saw mill, blacksmith, and historical hotel! Another big piece of Sheboygan County’s history comes from its many pillar companies that have helped to shape the county over the years. Our host, Andrea Boehlke, visits with Louie Gentine of Sargento Foods and Laura Kohler of The Kohler Company to learn more about these iconic companies’ beginnings. <br /><br />What episode of Discover Wisconsin would be complete without sampling some of the local cuisine? Eric Paulsen visits the city of Sheboygan where the Sheboygan hard roll was born and a husband and wife team have brought an authentic taste of Italy to the county with their 4 (FOUR) must-see restaurants. Eric sits down with Stefano and Whitney Viglietti to learn about Trattoria Stefano, Il Ritrovo, Field to Fork, and Stefano’s Slo Food Market, which are all located on the same block of downtown Sheboygan and offer some of the best food that you’ll find anywhere. If that wasn’t already enough, Eric also has the scoop on a regular food truck meetup that will ensure that everyone in your family can find something delightful to eat in one location.<br /><br />Golfing professionals may already be aware of Sheboygan County’s astounding golf courses but it is time for everyone else to get in the know! Eric checks in with several local golf courses that offer one-of-a-kind golfing experiences for golfers of any skill level. Destination Kohler offers two locations, Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run, that have become known around the world by hosting the Ryder Cup and PGA Championships. While they are challenging for the professional golfer, these beautiful courses remain accessible to novice golfers as well thanks to the thoughtful consideration put into their design by Pete Dye. Eric also visits the Quit Qui Oc Golf Club and Sunset Hills Golf Course & Driving Range where it’s clear that this is a community that loves golfing and is ensuring that the game stays thriving for generation after generation of golfers. <br /><br />We couldn’t spend time this close to Lake Michigan and not go fishing, so Eric met up with local charter fishing expert, Dumper Dan. Yes, that's really his name. Yes, we ask him about it. Dumper Dan has been in the business for decades and his fleet of boats regularly haul in some of the best freshwater fish that you can find. <br /><br />Lastly, before leaving town, Eric dries off at Road America to catch a few races. We asked around and can confirm that this track is THE favorite of so many drivers and fans alike. This Fall and Winter on Discover Wisconsin, Eric Paulsen takes us on a journey to four different Wisconsin communities for some chilly fun. As the shades of green morph into burnt oranges and blazing golds throughout the Wisconsin landscape, people button up their sweaters and head outside to enjoy the auburn-painted scenery. We head to Barron, Wisconsin where the Fall decor awaits bedazzled spectators. We begin at Country Lane Market and Pantry with owner Ezra Bender. Local pantry items as well as meats, cheeses and fudge line the shelves of the quaint store. Eric explores the Thursday farmer’s market held on the grounds of Country Market. With over one hundred art and food vendors, the hardest part of our day is picking between brick oven fired pizza and Navajo Fry Bread tacos! The Barron Fall festival brings us downtown where we enjoy live music and hand-crafted art. Lastly, we end our trip with a romantic evening of music and spirit tasting at the newly built Church Barn. <br /><br />The fiery leaves make way to the earth which is soon blanketed with snow. Our winter begins in Menomonie where the community embraces the winter wonderland with outdoor activities and cozy campfires. A late night arrival, we join the locals in a candle light ski and snowshoe gathering right off the Red Cedar State Trail. We warm up with Mayor Randy Knaack over some hot cocoa and good conversation. After a good night’s sleep, we head out for an ice fishing adventure on Lake Menomin. Here we enjoy a bonfire on the ice with Donna and Steve, two Menomonie locals, and their grandson (and professional fisherman), Leo. The bonfires continue at Brewery Nønic, where we meet the owner, Brandon Vernon, to learn about his role in and love for Menomonie’s progressive community. We end our time in Menomonie at WoodWind Park. After transforming an old abandoned ski resort into a tubing hill, ice skating rink, and miles of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails, the owners Paul and Meagan Frank welcome the public to enjoy their now charming winter getaway.<br /><br />As the frost moves in, we find warmth in family and friends and the calmness of serene winter landscapes. In the Driftless area of Wisconsin, Sauk County is one such place we experience total calm. On the edge of the county, White Mound County Park is home to a quiet ambience of natural beauty. We enjoy the heat from the wood burning stove at Prairie Smoke Terrace where we warm up while enjoying some games and a hearty meal. We end our evening stargazing in this no-light zone, making White Mound such a special and rare place to enjoy the night sky.<br /><br />Finally as the end of Winter approaches, we head up north to the peaceful pines. First, however, Eric takes us on an action-filled day at Bent’s camp. After a meal at the Bent’s Camp Lodge we head off to experience The Radar Run and more importantly, the Bikini Run! Gotta watch to find out! After a long day of hanging with the locals (these guys know how to party), we sleep off our adrenaline and “cool down” with members of the frosty snowmobile alliance at Brew’s Pub.
