Tomahawk is often considered the gateway to the Northwoods, and it has everything you’re looking for in a Wisconsin winter adventure! Join Discover Wisconsin host Apurba, as she returns to Tomahawk for her first snowmobile tour and a jump in the lake!<br /><br />The natural beauty of Tomahawk is absolutely stunning in the winter. Snow-dusted forests are contoured by multiple frozen waterways: Lake Mohawksin, Lake Nokomis, Lake Alice, the Spirit River Flowage and the Wisconsin River. The seasonal transformation provides new opportunities to get outside and have fun. There are hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails through the Tomahawk area, with resorts, restaurants and service stations right along the trail. Apurba rides the Hiawatha Trail with her fiancé and some local snowmobilers. They cross over Lake Nokomis to find a popular fishing tournament. Tip Up! Later in the afternoon, Apurba goes for an icy plunge at the Star Splash on Lake Mohawksin. Grandfather, Larry Erickson, and his grandson, Brodie Erickson started their history with snowmobiling together when Brodie was just a baby in Hurley, Wisconsin. Larry has been in The White Thunder snowmobile club for decades now while Brodie spearheaded his own group, a youth snowmobile club called The Little Rippers. With a value on community and exploration of those sacred untouched views just after a snowfall, we hear about why this family’s life is set on snowmobiling. Let’s explore the snow capitol in Iron County!<br /><br />Flying over the vast trail systems of Hurley we see riders spraying down snowy trails with their sleds. Learning about the work that goes into grooming this system shows all of the care that goes into this sport, which takes teams of volunteers to keep running. The giant groomer machines glide deep into the night into morning. The family is proud of the work they put into them.<br /><br />At Weber Lake, Trail Coordinator, Tara, tells us about all of the other winter sports and activities found in Iron County from cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, ice skating, ice fishing. We learn how much has gone into preserving these sporting opportunities while maintaining and improving safety for participants both locals and visitors. Brindlewood Barn in Hilbert, WI, provides a beautiful, rustic barn structure with original exposed beams, lit by the twinkle of string lights.
