Across the state, Wisconsin corn growers have made significant investments in managing Nitrogen to protect water quality. Berget Family Farms located right outside Darlington is a cash crop grain operation that is also helping to maintain a healthy water supply. <br /><br />One method used to preserve land and water resources is by creating large grassy swaths of land that help control runoff. These waterways help keep soil in place and slow the rush of water that comes off the fields following heavy rainfall. The dense grass aides by filtering out some of the sediment before the water runs into a nearby creek. Megan Saunders, the Grain Farm Manager at Berget Family Farm is dedicated to these kinds of sustainability efforts “We’re passionate about not only the water on our farms but also our neighbors and the water in our surrounding communities.” The efforts put forth by farms like the Berget Family Farms results in a better harvest and more sustainable practices that can be implemented by different farms across the state.

2020 will provide Wisconsin residents with the opportunity to be counted. The U.S. Census is mandated by the Constitution and takes place every 10 years. The goal is to take count of every person living in the United States, the District of Columbia, and the five U.S. territories. By April 1st, every Wisconsin home will receive an invitation to participate in one of three ways: by mail, telephone, or online. The census asks straightforward questions like; how many people are in your home? What are the ages of the people in your home? What is the ethnicity of the individuals within your home? It is important to know that the census will never ask you questions about banking or credit card information, and anything regarding donations, or politics.<br /><br />The U.S. government assures that all personal information is kept confidential. Participation in the census benefits the state in many ways. Marshfield Clinic has been leading federally funded vaccine research for nearly 20 years. Each year, their research includes the study of the effectiveness of the influenza vaccine. While many people may not consider the time and science that goes into their annual flu shot, the research team at Marshfield Clinic is dedicated to learning more and improving the vaccine year after year. The CDC recommends that all adults and children over the age of six months are vaccinated against the flu each year. <br /><br />The Marshfield Clinic is one of the largest rural health systems in the U.S., and the Research Institute at Marshfield Clinic has a large team of skilled researchers tasked with enrolling patients and generating study data. Every year, more than 2,000 patients consent to be part of the flu vaccine study, a swab is collected from both their nose and throat and it is then tested for the flu virus. After the vaccination status is identified the vaccinated participants are then compared to unvaccinated participants, and researchers are then able to estimate how well the vaccine is protecting people against the flu. The data from this study is then used by the World Health Organization to help guide vaccine strain selection for the next flu season.

What started as a music festival to save the iconic steel bridge in Sturgeon Bay, has turned into a trio of music events that take over the Holiday Music Motel for an entire week, three different times each year! Artists flock to Door County from all over the country and head to a little motel where they spend the week writing and recording new collaborative music to perform. The three different collaborative sessions take place in June, February, and October each with a different theme of music in mind. The event aims to get people to collaborate out of their genre and push the boundaries of their talent. <br /><br />Musicians are randomly paired up each night, doing this opens doors for the artists to think creatively and try new things. The immersive experience comes only by invitation or referral making it pretty exclusive, but the event continues to grow with new artists each year. Many of the musicians come back year after year to take part in this event and grow it further. If you’re interested in catching the next show it takes place on February 6th and 7th at the Third Avenue Playhouse in downtown Sturgeon Bay.
