Pheasant Branch Conservancy | Know Your Wisconsin

Pheasant Branch Conservancy is a natural area located west of Madison, in Middleton. It contains a marsh with open water, springs, prairies, meadows, lowland forest and wooded hills. These various habitats sustain a wide variety of plants and animals and create a haven for local birdwatchers. “One of the cool things about Pheasant Branch is we have five or six different habitats and many birds need at least two habitats for their survival during the course of the year so they can be successful. Of the 400 bird species that you find in Wisconsin, you can find almost half of them here at some time during the year,” said Pheasant Branch Conservancy Education Coordinator Anne Boucher. Over the last 25 years, thousands of volunteers have restored this land by weeding invasive species, collecting and spreading prairie seeds, coordinating prescribed fires, and working on construction projects throughout the year to provide the community with this free, public space. Cellulose Products | Know Your Wisconsin

Forest products are all around us. Some products are obvious, while others may take you by surprise. At the USDA Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, researchers are constantly studying the ways in which forest products can be used. One common byproduct of trees that can be found in numerous consumer products is cellulose. Dr. Carl Houtman, Chemical Engineer for the USDA Forest Products Laboratory explains, “Trees are an amazing thing, they really provide an amazing range of products for us that we sometimes don’t even think about. Cellulose is one of the fundamental building blocks of trees. Part of the reason cellulose is really useful is that its kind of like molecular Velcro. So, it actually is the element of the wood that really provides the strength.” <br /><br />The most common way to extract cellulose is through a chemical pulping process known as kraft cooking. The process starts with wood chips and ends with an organic compound that can be found all around us. Dr. Houtman explains “There is sometimes cellulose in your pre-grated cheese. There’s also cellulose in tablet medicines. If you look on the back of your shampoo bottle, you might see something like carboxymethyl cellulose, or you might see something like ethopropol cellulose. Sustainable Forest Management - Blowdown Logging | Know Your Wisconsin

The forest industry is the number two economic driver in the state of Wisconsin. According to the Wisconsin DNR, it provides more than 64 thousand jobs and has an output of $24.7 billion each year. Dennis Schoeneck, owner of Enterprise Forest Products, has worked in this industry for 43 years and wants people to understand the importance of forest management. “Most people think of us as loggers, I like to think of us as a sustainable harvesting technician. That is because of the machines we run, the science we put into making sure our forests are sustainable” said Schoeneck. Part of responsible forest management involves harvesting timber from blowdown areas - a job that is significantly more challenging and harder on equipment than normal harvesting operations. Crews like Dennis’s are doing their best to salvage as much damaged timber as possible before it goes to waste. Salvaging these usable timber speeds regrowth, putting the cycle of sustainability back into action sooner. There are thousands of jobs in the forest industry. Wisconsin’s First Domed School | Know Your Wisconsin

In need of an updated schooling space for their fifth through twelfth-grade students, leaders with the Johnson Creek School District opted for a domed design - an approach thought to be safer and more sustainable. The school’s unique layout consists of five interconnected Monolithic Domes, the first of its kind in Wisconsin and the second full-dome school in the Midwest. Three domes are 140 feet in diameter, while the other two are 160 feet in diameter. Adding to the efficiency and flexibility of the dome-style classrooms, the interior walls can be rearranged and moved to work with each learning space. The spherical structures ultimately cost 20 percent less than building a traditional school. In Wisconsin, some airports are more known and more traveled than others. Two such airports are Milwaukee International Airport, the state’s largest, and Wittman Regional Airport, home of the EAA AirVenture. It’s the County Airports in our state, however, that are often easier to navigate and offer a variety of aviation experiences. There are 97 total airports across the state that are municipally owned. County airports have grown through the years to provide services that better the lives of travelers and citizens. Various aviation companies are based at County Airports. Wisconsin Aviation has offered services like air charters and flight training at Dodge and Dane County airports since 1981. County airports along with aviation companies also impact the economy.
