Years ago, a booming logging industry created paths and roads throughout Wisconsin. Today, many have been transformed into recreational trails used all year round for hiking, biking, ATVing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and more. The maintenance and management of these trails is largely dependent on the state’s forest industry, which actively works to keep forests healthy and accessible. The snowmobile enthusiasts of Wisconsin have embraced a sport called WaterX (pronounced “water cross”), which involves taking a snowmobile out of winter, bringing it into the summer and racing it on the open water. In 1977, the first annual World Championship of Snowmobile WaterX was held in Grantsburg Wisconsin, and for some Wisconsin families, watercross events have become a summer tradition. “My father’s been racing since the early 90s, so I kind of grew up around it. Along Highway 10 in Neillsville, The Highground Veterans Memorial park seems to rise up from the rolling hills of the region. “The name itself has meaning. When soldiers part in a tactical situation on the battlefield, often we’ll say to each other, ‘I’ll see you on the highground,’ because the highground is the end. It’s where you finish, and it’s where you want to meet your buddies when it’s over. It’s a place of peace and rest,” explained Mike Jason, retired U.S. Army. <br /><br />The Highground started as the Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Memorial Project in 1984. Today, it has grown to a 155-acre park with a mission to honor, educate, and heal veterans, their families, and all who visit. The park includes 19 tributes, a museum, a gift shop, four miles of hiking trails, and Camp Victory, a 300-acre camp located 18 miles north of the main campus. The Highground also has events that help veterans throughout the year. Some of those events include the annual Ride to Remember motorcycle rally, which raises awareness for The Highground’s veterans’ programs. People from all over the state embark on a multi-day bike trip to The Highground during the Heroes Ride, which honors the Wisconsin soldiers who lost their lives in all conflicts from Vietnam to the present day. The city of Ashland, located on the shores of Lake Superior in Northern Wisconsin, is bursting with color, thanks to the work of two local artists. Sue Martinsen started painting murals with fellow artist Kelly Meredith 21 years ago, when they received a grant for downtown’s first historical mural. Today, the city is full of their work depicting people and events from the community’s history. Although they’re sights to behold on their own, the murals are packed with so much culture and history that Martinson recommends taking the tour or referencing a printed guide. “We started referring to them as outdoor museums, which is really what they are. I like to think that these people, in these buildings, really still exist and that they will just step off the wall and tell somebody a story,” explained Martinson.
