Ho-Chunk Dugout Canoes: A Journey Through History
In an effort to preserve its cultural history, a team at the Ho-Chunk Nation’s Heritage Preservation Department has constructed a traditional dugout canoe from a Cottonwood log much like the ones used for time immemorial. This canoe was used on a five day long canoe journey traveling through traditional Ho-Chunk sites and waterways piloted by members of the Ho-Chunk Nation. The Wisconsin Historical Society recently uncovered a 1,200 year old dugout canoe from the bottom of Lake Mendota, which was one of the sites of significance that was visited followed by visiting the canoe itself at the Wisconsin Historical Society’s State Archive Preservation Facility.
Join us today to learn more about this significant accomplishment as we talk with the youngest paddler aboard the dugout canoe, following them on the first day of their journey!
