In Wisconsin, Dirt is for Racing | Know Your Wisconsin
Wisconsin is a premier destination for motorsports, and auto racing is a favorite among racers and spectators. The state is currently home to 38 race tracks, including 25 that are made of dirt. Between roaring engines, hairpin turns, and cheering crowds, attending a race event at one of these tracks is an experience unlike any other. Long time racer Josh Hessler explains, “It’s a huge adrenaline rush. It goes by so quick out there. You’re thinking, ‘Okay next corner got to hit your marks, where to hit your brakes, where to hit the throttle, who’s beside you.’ I don’t know it’s a rush you can’t explain.”
Oftentimes the tracks themselves also have deep roots and longstanding traditions within the community. Hessler explains that Red Cedar Speedway in Menomonie, “Was built in the ’70s by a bunch of farmers and locals that put all their time and effort into building this track.” The support and comradery shown by fans and racers in the racing community is clear to see, especially on a hot summer night.
