Wisconsin’s Walking Tours: The Cheese Capital of the World (Segment)

February 29, 2024

Wisconsin has a deep history, and there are so many cities that have put a lot of work in preserving the story of their community. Mariah tours the downtowns of Burlington, Plymouth, Ashland and Waukesha to learn how each continues to keep their past alive and remind us why that is so important.

Plymouth, WI is the second-largest community in Sheboygan County and is known as the Cheese Capital of the World. Founded in 1845, Plymouth has a rich history that is explorable by its beautiful mural paintings. A total of 21 extraordinary mural works are showcased on the streets of Plymouth, which were painted by the Walldogs (http://thewalldogs.com), a group of highly skilled sign painters and mural artists from all over the globe. All of the murals are located within a 6-block radius, making Plymouth easily tourable as well as an attractive destination for visitors. Grab your FREE downloadable walking tour here: https://plymouthwisconsin.com/experience_tours.php and check out some of the other exciting features showcased in the brochure as well. With colorful murals helping to tell Plymouth’s history, the town is fully embracing and celebrating its rich cheese history.

Mariah pays a visit to Sartori Cheese to speak with Jim Sartori, the current owner of the fourth-generation, family-owned and operated cheese company. Founded in 1939 by Jim’s grandfather, Paolo Sartori, the company Sartori Cheese reflects the deep-rooted family tradition and devotion to high-quality dairy that Wisconsin and Plymouth pride themselves on. In fact, the Walldogs crafted a beautiful mural located right outside of Sartori Cheese, that features Paulo Sartori himself. http://www.sartoricheese.com/home.html

One exciting event special to Plymouth that allows for walkable touring is the Cheese Capital Wine Walk (https://plymouthwisconsin.com/cheese-capital-wine-walk.php). An annual summer event, the Cheese Capital Wine Walk is perfect for both visitors and locals that share a love of wine, cheese, and friendly local businesses. During the event, 20 downtown Plymouth businesses become wine tasting rooms where visitors can spend time in each business and enjoy a wine sample, along with local cheese tastings and live music.

Whether it be to explore Wisconsin’s history, appreciate the works of the Walldogs, or taste quality dairy in the Cheese Capital of the world, Plymouth is the perfect place to visit and tour for a delightful, immersive Wisconsin experience.
