Northwest Wisconsin is packed with places that capture the heart and soul of the north, from one-of-a-kind landscapes and breathtaking waterfalls to small towns rich with history. If you’re looking for spots that offer both adventure and tranquility, this trio of stunning destinations will have you packing your bags in no time!
1. Northwest Sands: Moquah, Bass Lake, & Barnes Barrens

First on the list are the Northwest Sands, which aren’t your typical Wisconsin woods. Instead of thick forests, you’ll find vast barrens: wide-open areas of sandy soil, sunrises, and sunsets that stretch for miles. Believe it or not, this used to be how millions of acres looked—kept open by wildfires! Today, this rare ecosystem survives thanks to carefully planned prescribed burns. Within the region, there are three you absolutely need to check out:
Moquah Barrens
Plan your visit to Moquah Barrens, and keep your eyes peeled! You might just be lucky enough to see wildlife that’s rarely spotted outside this area. Here are a few to watch for: sharp-tailed grouse, the occasional wolf, wild turkeys, and black bears roaming the edges. It’s a spot full of life and surprises you might not find anywhere else!
Bass Lake Barrens
A little way over, Bass Lake Barrens has its own inspiring story to share! Barely five years ago, it was a dense forest. After timber harvesting and fire management, the open barrens returned, bringing back more than 150 animal and plant species, including sharp-tailed grouse that need this open space to thrive.
Barnes Barrens
Last but not least, Barnes Barrens is tucked right in the heart of the Bayfield County Forest. It’s about a thousand acres of open trails where snowmobilers, ATV riders, hunters, and outdoor lovers all come together. Whether you’re out on wheels or boots, it’s a place where everyone finds their own kind of adventure!
2. Hidden Waterfalls: Bayfield, Ashland, & Iron Counties

Next up, it’s time to explore Northwest Wisconsin’s waterfalls! In the mood to hike, swim, or simply soak up some peaceful natural beauty? Not to worry, there’s a waterfall here with your name on it!
Bayfield County
At Siskiwit Falls, just outside Cornucopia in Bayfield County, get the best of both worlds: adventure and relaxation! Float the waters on a tube, cast your line for trout in the clear pools, or take a peaceful walk along one of the five trails that meander past incredible rock kettles. And, for a bonus, check out Lost Creek Falls—just five minutes down the road!
Ashland County
Over in Ashland County, Morgan Falls is a gem for visitors of all ages and abilities! A smooth, flat trail less than a mile long takes you right to a stunning 70-foot waterfall framed by rugged, rocky cliffs. When autumn comes around, the fall colors turn this entire spot into a breathtaking sight you have to see for yourself!
Iron County
Up for a challenge? Make Potato River Falls in Iron County your final stop! Descend 131 stairs to reach the edge of a deep gorge where the upper falls thunder with power. Quick tip: If you stop by in winter, watching the ice break up here is absolutely mesmerizing! Meanwhile, the lower falls provide a refreshing swimming spot after your hike!
3. The Town of Mellen: History & Heart

Beyond its stunning natural landscapes, Northwest Wisconsin’s towns are full of character! And Mellen has a story all its own—full of heart and history.
History
At its center, the Mellen Area Historical Society Museum invites visitors to step back in time. This building has worn many hats—once a gym, dance hall, and gathering space—and now it preserves the artifacts and stories that make the town truly unique.
Just down the street, the Legion Memorial Library offers much more than just books. With outdoor tiered seating and a little free library, it’s a welcoming stop for trail hikers passing along the North Country Trail or locals looking for community connection.
Heart
Rounding out Mellen’s charm is Dr. Gilman Park. Named after the beloved local doctor who famously threw his patients’ debts into the river after a devastating 1940s flood, this park is a symbol of the town’s heart. Today, it’s a go-to spot where visitors and residents alike gather, relax, and soak in the spirit that makes Mellen special.
