Wisconsin’s kringle tradition is deeply rooted in the state’s Danish heritage. In the late 1800s, Racine, Wisconsin, became a hub for Danish immigrants, who brought a rich culture of culinary treasures and traditions, including the kringle.

Originally, the kringle took more of a pretzel shape, filled with simple ingredients–almonds, currants, and raisins–and topped with a light sugar dusting. The kringle later evolved under Danish-American influences, transforming in shape and flavor. From its original pretzel shape to the now-familiar oval, the kringle adapted to accommodate an array of delightful fillings.

Among the many bakeries that emerged in the 1900s, O&H Danish Bakery became renowned for its family recipe, passed down through generations. The kringle’s appeal grew as it became a staple at local gatherings and festive celebrations, especially during the holidays.

By 2013, the kringle was officially designated as Wisconsin’s state pastry. This remarkable pastry is more than just a treat; it serves as a symbol of Wisconsin’s rich Danish roots and the enduring connection between the state’s past and present.

These Danish roots are forever kept alive in Racine, The Kringle Capital of the World, at O&H Danish Bakery. Founded by Danish immigrant Christian Olesen, who brought his passion for baking to America, O&H Danish Bakery has a rich history that spans over 75 years and four generations.

His journey began when he settled in Racine, where he honed his skills at local bakeries before opening O&H Danish Bakery. Since its founding year, O&H Danish Bakery has been baking beloved Danish delights for Racine and beyond. In fact, the kringle has become synonymous with this long-standing bakery.

Second-generation Raymond Olesen, alongside his wife Myrna, took over in 1963, fueling this rich family legacy forward. With increasing demand, they relocated to a larger facility. By 1982, they opened a second location, adding more flavors and producing thousands of kringles daily.

Today, O&H Danish Bakery operates five locations across Southeast Wisconsin and ships hundreds of thousands of Kringles worldwide! Peter Olesen, Christian’s great-grandson, serves as the current president, using the same tasty, traditional recipes and techniques.
