This Fall and Winter on Discover Wisconsin, Eric Paulsen takes us on a journey to four different Wisconsin communities for some chilly fun. As the shades of green morph into burnt oranges and blazing golds throughout the Wisconsin landscape, people button up their sweaters and head outside to enjoy the auburn-painted scenery. We head to Barron, Wisconsin where the Fall decor awaits bedazzled spectators. We begin at Country Lane Market and Pantry with owner Ezra Bender. Local pantry items as well as meats, cheeses and fudge line the shelves of the quaint store. Eric explores the Thursday farmer’s market held on the grounds of Country Market. With over one hundred art and food vendors, the hardest part of our day is picking between brick oven fired pizza and Navajo Fry Bread tacos! The Barron Fall festival brings us downtown where we enjoy live music and hand-crafted art. Lastly, we end our trip with a romantic evening of music and spirit tasting at the newly built Church Barn. <br /><br />The fiery leaves make way to the earth which is soon blanketed with snow. Our winter begins in Menomonie where the community embraces the winter wonderland with outdoor activities and cozy campfires. A late night arrival, we join the locals in a candle light ski and snowshoe gathering right off the Red Cedar State Trail. We warm up with Mayor Randy Knaack over some hot cocoa and good conversation. After a good night’s sleep, we head out for an ice fishing adventure on Lake Menomin. Here we enjoy a bonfire on the ice with Donna and Steve, two Menomonie locals, and their grandson (and professional fisherman), Leo. The bonfires continue at Brewery Nønic, where we meet the owner, Brandon Vernon, to learn about his role in and love for Menomonie’s progressive community. We end our time in Menomonie at WoodWind Park. After transforming an old abandoned ski resort into a tubing hill, ice skating rink, and miles of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails, the owners Paul and Meagan Frank welcome the public to enjoy their now charming winter getaway.<br /><br />As the frost moves in, we find warmth in family and friends and the calmness of serene winter landscapes. In the Driftless area of Wisconsin, Sauk County is one such place we experience total calm. On the edge of the county, White Mound County Park is home to a quiet ambience of natural beauty. We enjoy the heat from the wood burning stove at Prairie Smoke Terrace where we warm up while enjoying some games and a hearty meal. We end our evening stargazing in this no-light zone, making White Mound such a special and rare place to enjoy the night sky.<br /><br />Finally as the end of Winter approaches, we head up north to the peaceful pines. First, however, Eric takes us on an action-filled day at Bent’s camp. After a meal at the Bent’s Camp Lodge we head off to experience The Radar Run and more importantly, the Bikini Run! Gotta watch to find out! After a long day of hanging with the locals (these guys know how to party), we sleep off our adrenaline and “cool down” with members of the frosty snowmobile alliance at Brew’s Pub. Sheboygan County is filled with fun surprises and today we’re going to show you three of our favorite adventures to try for yourself! <br /><br />Our host, Eric Paulsen, has a lot to fit into his day touring the outdoor sights across Sheboygan County but he has a treat planned for himself at the end of the day if he can do it all. <br /><br />Did you know that Sheboygan is the freshwater surfing capital of the WORLD? When Eric found this out, he just had to see it for himself. Has he surfed before? Nope! But with a lesson from Mike Miller at EOS Surf Shop, he’s ready to try it out for himself. The best time for surfing is in the fall but there’s always something fun to do on the water and EOS Surf Shop can set you up for a great time on waves large and small. <br /><br />To dry off, Eric hops on his bike and rides out to one of Sheboygan County’s many bike trails: The Old Plank Road Trail. The 21 mile trail runs through the county with many trailheads along the way that allow you to customize your journey to any distance that you like and is a great way to see a lot of beautiful scenery. <br /><br />For his last stop, Eric can’t resist visiting another lake. This time, it’s a lake that fits entirely inside of Sheboygan County, but that doesn’t make it any less great. It’s Elkhart Lake! After his long bike ride, Eric’s legs could use a rest, but that means it’s time to let his arms do the work by paddling around this beautiful destination. With the help of Elkhart Lake Watersports, found at The Shore Club Wisconsin, Eric has his pick of a fleet of water vehicles to choose from. Today feels like a kayak day and the friendly staff have him in a boat and enjoying all the smooth paddling and sights this lake has to offer in no time! <br /><br />Eric’s reward at the end of his county-wide tour is found right on the shores of Elkhart Lake at Barefoot Tiki Bar where the vibe is beautiful lakefront views and delicious food and drinks. It’s the perfect place to unwind and refuel after a busy day of seeing the sights. This year on Discover Wisconsin, Eric experiences the seasons in Eagle River with friends and family. DW host, Alex Wherley, even joins us for a little rustic winter fun. <br /><br />As the summer sun hits Eagle River, Eric treks up north with his family and friends. Upon arrival, they begin their morning adventure sailing the chain of lakes by pirate ship. Captain Steve invites all young lads and lassies aboard for a brief lesson on Eagle River lakes and wildlife. Captain Steve’s favorite part? Watching kids grow up over the last 19 years as families return annually to Eagle River’s waters. Eric and friends continue their adventures at Burger Bash downtown where they meet grillmaster, Chris Westfall. Eric and Chris duck out for a bit to chat about Chris’s summer trips to Eagle River as a child, fostering his love and nostalgia for the Northwoods.<br /><br />As Fall hit Eagle River, Eric returns to enjoy a solo trip among the colors. He meets with musky hunter Jared Adamovich for a fishing adventure on Eagle Lake. From one lake to another, Eric heads to Lake Nokomis for a cranberry marsh tour with David Zawitowski where he learns about Wisconsin’s state fruit. After a peaceful morning, Eric changes it up with a little Cranberry Fest fun. Finally, he joins Kim Emerson at the Vilas County State Fair for a plethora of cranberry goodness including cranberry beer and cranberry brats. <br />As winter takes over Eagle River, Eric heads back up once again. This time, DW host Alex Wherley gets in on the action. The two head up to Eagle River to meet some of the locals for an Eagle River guys and gals weekend. The guys bulk up on some breakfast at Leif’s Cafe before they head off for fat tire biking while the gals warm up with a cup of Joe at Eagle River roasters before heading out for a scenic snowmobile ride. After the rush, the guys put some calories back on with a few brews at Tribute Brewing Co. while chatting with the owner about the abundance of winter activities Eagle River offers. <br /><br />As we come full circle with Spring, Eric returns to Eagle River with his fiancé, Ann to enjoy a couples weekend in the city’s growing downtown. Not only has Eagle River expanded their local shops and restaurants, but the chamber of commerce has also cultivated a strong community through various events such as the Memorial Day Arts and Crafts Show. Here, Eric and Ann walk the sidewalk sales where local craftsmen and artists present and sell their work. The two also enjoy the events put on by The Warehouse Community Art Center in Eagle River. Eric and Ann meet John Langer, a potter and teacher at the Warehouse for a throwing lesson and great conversation. We finish it off with some wine and charcuterie board munchies at Mary Kate’s Wine Bar. <br /><br />It’s hard to match the beauty and reprieve of the northwoods. Every season offers unique and rustic experiences for those who long for the outdoors. It is also difficult to beat Eagle River’s tight knit community.
