It’s the place people go to escape,
A place made of cabins, pine trees and lakes.
But no matter how far you drive,
There’s no sign to say, “you’ve arrived”.
So just follow your heart till you find…
Your special place that brings peace of mind.
As you breathe in the air and unwind…
Your cares are all left behind.
It’s no mystery where the Northwoods start.
When you arrive Up North you’ll know,
In your heart.

I can’t find a better poem to describe my hometown of Eagle River. There really is no better place to unwind. Whether it’s summer or winter, there is something for all!
Don’t be shy! Come visit in winter! For the kids, check out the Northwoods Children’s Museum. There is always a smiling face to greet you. It won’t take long for you to see that you can even relax there too! There are a ton of awesome adventures for your kids to find themselves in. After that, grab a bite to eat at the family friendly restaurant, Leif’s. I can’t help but say, you’ll find some more smiling faces there to greet you as well, on top of an endless list of menu items that will not disappoint! When the night falls, be sure to catch an exciting men’s hockey game at the historical Eagle River Recreation Arena. The high energy, fast paced game can be enjoyed with family or friends. Hockey not your thing? That’s ok! Utilize those lakes, but be sure to bundle up. I’m talking about getting you to ice fish. Anyone can do it. Ranger Rick at Guide’s Choice will be sure to get you tackle ready and on your way.
I could go on and on about things to do in the winter, but let’s be frank: Hasn’t winter gone on for far too long? I’m moving onto summer, and I’m hoping you’re with me on that one! Go-karting, mini golf, zip-lining – OH MY! Kartway located on Hwy 45 North has got you covered … They even have horses for a trail ride! When heading up North, there are a couple of things you should bring on up. One of them should be your stand up paddleboard. There are numerous small lakes to soak up that sun while taking in the beauty of the water. Not what you were looking for? Okay, okay. Get yourself a boat and hook up a tube. Whether you are a kid or an adult, it’ll be a day you’ll never forget. Don’t just stop there! Rent a jet-ski and find yourself waving your hand off to fellow jet-skiers and boaters enjoying their time relaxing, right along side you. You may even wave to Captain Steve on the Pirate’s Hideaway, pirate ship. Pirate ship?!?! What? Yup, we’ve got one of those too. After a long day one can’t stay away from a Friday night fish fry. Try Riverstone, Eagle Waters or Twelve Pines. While all are very different restaurants, they will deliver a delicious fish fry.
I’m sure there are numerous cities “Up North” that may have similar things to do, but visit Eagle River for yourself. You’ll quickly see that it isn’t always all about the things to do. It’s about the environment. The people, the scenery, the fresh air, laying on the grass and actually seeing the stars. It’s at that very moment you’ll know, you really have arrived.
