In the heart of Lincoln County, a father-son duo has left an indelible mark on Central Wisconsin’s landscape. Herb Schotz, co-founder of the Ice Age Trail in 1974, passed his passion for the outdoors to his son, Chris Schotz, now known as “The Trail Guy.”

Chris combines science and artistry to transform Lincoln County’s wilderness into an outdoor playground for bikers and hikers alike. His crowning achievement, the 37-mile Underdown Trail System, showcases his visionary gift of seeing new trails in untouched terrain.

Each stunning trail, from the Underdown to the Ice Age, offers an unmatched experience, winding through lakes, bogs, hardwoods, and ridges. With such varied terrain, Lincoln County’s trails present a thrilling challenge.

Chris, alongside his wife Candy, dedicates his free time to creating and maintaining these infamous trail systems. Their efforts, supported by numerous volunteers, have transformed Lincoln County into a destination for outdoor recreation.
