About Wisconsin’s Coastal Byways
Wisconsin’s coastal byways are true gems, both naturally beautiful and historically rich. These state and nationally designated highways–Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway totaling 70 miles and Door County Coastal Byway measuring 66 miles–each offer picturesque scenery, fascinating history, and quaint communities.
Along both byways, Door County Coastal Byway and Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway, you’ll find many parks and destinations that have been protected, enhanced, or acquired through the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program. The Wisconsin Coastal Management Program strives to preserve and grant greater access to the natural and historic coasts of our state.
The program is dedicated to enhancing the coasts’ quality of life, for not only tourists, but also residents. Because of this impactful program, we have access to beautiful destinations. Together, we share the responsibility to care for them, while enjoying them now and in the future.
The Byway of Door County
First stop on Wisconsin’s coastal byway tour: Door County! In this Lake Michigan adventure, we’re riding along the Door County Coastal Byway–a 66 mile loop. Weaving through several charming communities, including Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay, Bailey’s Harbor, and Jacksonport, this byway holds so much adventure.
Egg Harbor
Each of its two main roads, Highway 42 and Highway 57, offer their own adventures. While Highway 42 leads you to the bayside, Highway 57 takes you to the lakeside. Up first, we’re venturing along Highway 42 to Egg Harbor–a bayside oasis. The quaint community is full of fun, from golf courses and sandy beaches to charming shops. There are also a variety of breweries, wineries and distilleries. And let’s not forget about Harbor View Park, where you can marvel in the epic views of Green Bay.
Fish Creek
Fish Creek here we come! With an array of shops, adorable cafes, art galleries, and mouth-watering cuisine, this community has all the flare. For all of our foodies, The White Gull Inn, operating since 1896, is a must-stop along your byway journey, especially for breakfast lovers. This is THE breakfast place, serving a delicious Door County Cherry stuffed french toast. As they say, food is fuel. Fuel your next stop to Peninsula State Park, home of over 3,000 acres to explore and Eagle Tower to unlock panoramic views of the vast shoreline.
Ephraim
Another culinary gem is Ephraim, which takes pride in their local and historic restaurant, Old Post Office Restaurant. Since 1874, the building has had many uses. It wasn’t until the 70’s when the restaurant found their signature–a traditional Door County fish boil! It’s here that you can taste fresh, local Lake Michigan Whitefish.
Sister Bay
Full sail ahead to Sister Bay! Experience the water in an all-new way with Sail Door County on the Edith M. Becker, or another vessel. Although, on-the-water explorations aren’t the only fun feature. At Newport State Park, the only state wilderness park and first international dark sky park in the state, offers an up-close look at the Niagara Escarpment–one of the area’s most distinct geological features.
Bailey’s Harbor
Ready to head on Highway 57? Up next, we’re hopping back on the byway to Bailey’s Harbor, home to Cana Island Lighthouse, an icon to Door County. Did you know that Door County is home to 11 lighthouses–more than any other county in the United States? It’s true, and there are several shipwrecks in the surrounding waters to uncover.
Jacksonport
Last on our list to uncover, as we tour on the Door County Coastal Byway is Whitefish Dunes State Park, just south of Jacksonport. This day-use only state park is worth the detour off Highway 57. It has some of the tallest dunes in Wisconsin and exciting lakeside water sports.

The Byway of Bayfield and Douglas County
Our Wisconsin coastal byway tour continues up North on the Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway! This 70 mile route on Highway 13 showcases the spectacular south shore of Lake Superior. Buckle up as we hit the road and stop by the communities of Washburn, Bayview, Bayfield, Red Cliff, Cornucopia, and Herbster. Before you begin, make a quick stop by the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center to gain a greater understanding of the history and heritage within these maritime communities.
Washburn
Now you’re ready for the great Northern exploration of this coastal byway. Can you guess the first town? It’s known as a little town on a big lake…Washburn, Wisconsin! From quaint antique shops downtown to fascinating artifacts at the Washburn Cultural Center, there’s never a dull moment.
Bayview
Next, driving on Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway, Bayview opens up bright, exciting, lakeside opportunities, including Houghton Falls State Natural Area, a pristine beach, and distinctive microclimate that’s ideal for the local orchards. For all your fruit and berry needs, stop by Hauser’s Superior View Farm, one of the finest and freshest in all of Bayfield County for over 100 years.
Bayfield
Off to the town of Bayfield, which is known as an iconic harbor town. Bayfield is situated right on the shore of Lake Superior–the largest of all the Great Lakes. It wouldn’t be an iconic harbor town without endless outdoor recreation and, of course, a fresh, fish dinner brought to you by Bodin’s. Settle in for the night at one of the amazing accommodations, from historic inns to airbnb’s.
Red Cliff
As a new day begins, make your way to Red Cliff, where you can visit and explore the first ever tribal National Park, Frog Bay. Inside the park, explore 1.7 miles of hiking trails that weave through hardwood forests and sandy beaches. In the distance, take in epic views of the Apostle Islands. Nearby, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore awaits, one of the most popular and must-see attractions, where you can access the 22 islands and hike above the famous sea caves on Meyer’s Beach.
Cornucopia
From caves to Cornucopia, it’s just getting exciting! Cornucopia may be small, but it’s mighty! In fact, it is home to the Northernmost Post Office in Wisconsin and Ehler’s General Store–a cute go-to shop in the community. In addition, it’s in Cornucopia that visitors can access five breathtaking waterfalls, including Siskiwit River Preserve and Falls.
Herbster
As this Northern Wisconsin coastal byway journey nears its end, soak up the sunset in Herbster. Reflect on the unique characteristics and culture of these coastal communities.
