  • Point to Lapointe Swim

    Swimming to the island has been a storied feat around the Bayfield area for decades. Point to LaPointe started as a community swim for 24 people in 2006. The event is now a race featuring more than 400 participants. Swimmers have encountered all of Lake Superior's moods over the years, from calm, flat water to strong crosswinds with 2 foot waves. The course follows the path of the winter "ice road", starting in Bayfield and landing at a beautiful family home on Madeline Island. Spectators take the ferry across which offers views of the race. The event is a fundraiser for swim programs at the Bayfield Area Recreation Center. Casual swimmers can still enter the community event and bring their own escort.

In the beginning of October in 1857, Abraham Lincoln visited Beloit and Janesville, staying overnight at the residence of William Morrison Tallman and attending Sunday morning church at First Congregational in Janesville. In honor of his visit to our community, we are inviting Lincoln back for a three day weekend, featuring tours of the Lincoln-Tallman House, games, music, Lincoln movie, breakfast and a car show. On Friday, Lincoln will arrive in Janesville at noon and spend the afternoon with a secret lucky Elementary School. Join him from 6-8pm at the Janesville Country Club where you can enjoy a great dinner, get your pictures taken, and possibly win a great prize. Saturday from 11am - 4pm, greet Lincoln in a welcome ceremony at the Lincoln-Tallman House. Come enjoy a day on the lawn with your entire family and participate in fun 19th century games, hear some fun live music and take a tour of the home. See where Lincoln slept when he stayed with the Tallmans and hear the humorous story of how he missed his train back to Illinois. On Sunday at 10am, attend a service at the First Congregational Church in Janesville much like Lincoln did with the Tallman family on October 2, 1857. Afterwards, enjoy some doughnuts and coffee with him before making your way back to the Lincoln-Tallman House for Rock County Historical Society's first-ever car show: Lincolns on the Lawn.
