Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan coastline is now home to the newest National Marine Sanctuary: The Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast! Join our host, TeKema Balentine, as she tours the towns and cities connected by this marine sanctuary to learn about its importance and the ways these communities help connect Wisconsin and the world to our maritime history. <br /><br />In Port Washington, TeKema meets with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Russ Green to talk about NOAA’s efforts to map out the new sanctuary using sonar technology and the ways visitors near and far can experience the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast’s known shipwrecks for themselves and follow along as new ones are discovered.<br /><br />Traveling to Manitowoc and Two Rivers, TeKema tours some of the area’s museums to learn about our maritime heritage and history. At the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, she meets with Executive Director Cathy Green to talk about the connections between the work at the marine sanctuary with that of the museums. <br /><br />TeKema’s last stop is in Sheboygan to meet with the President of Visit Sheboygan Amy Wilson, PhD inside of an actual recovered shipwreck. Join us today for a visit to 2022’s Ho-Chunk Memorial Day Weekend Pow Wow! This year’s events were expanded to include a weekend’s worth of activities including adult and youth, men’s and women’s, lacrosse and double ball tournaments, mocassin scramble tournaments, social dances, vendors, and more. This was all in addition to the traditional grand entry, dancing, music, and games that have accompanied Ho-Chunk Pow Wows in the past. This year, the event was hosted by the Ho-Chunk Youth Services and featured many youth drummers and crowned a Youth Ambassador and Youth Princess at the event.<br /><br />Take a look and don’t forget that these events happen every year on Memorial Day weekends and Labor Day weekends at the Andrew Black Hawk Pow Wow Grounds in Black River Falls. In an effort to preserve its cultural history, a team at the Ho-Chunk Nation’s Heritage Preservation Department has constructed a traditional dugout canoe from a Cottonwood log much like the ones used for time immemorial. This canoe was used on a five day long canoe journey traveling through traditional Ho-Chunk sites and waterways piloted by members of the Ho-Chunk Nation.
